GSL Education’s South Yorkshire branch is excited to offer an excellent opportunity for a compassionate and dedicated SEN Teaching Assistant to join our client schools in Wakefield. This role is perfect for individuals experienced in supporting students with Special Educational Needs (SEN), helping them to thrive both academically and socially in a supportive learning environment.

Job Summary:

As an SEN Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with students with a variety of special educational needs, providing one-to-one and small group support. Your role will be crucial in fostering a positive and inclusive classroom atmosphere, enabling students to overcome barriers to learning and achieve their full potential.

Key Responsibilities for SEN Teaching Assistant:

  • Provide tailored support to students with SEN, including Autism, ADHD, and other learning difficulties.
  • Assist in planning and delivering lessons, ensuring activities are accessible and engaging for students with additional needs.
  • Foster a nurturing and inclusive learning environment that encourages participation and personal development.
  • Support students’ social, emotional, and academic progress by implementing strategies that promote well-being and confidence.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers and the SENCO to implement Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and monitor student progress.
  • Help maintain a positive learning atmosphere by managing behaviour in line with school policies.

Essential Requirements for SEN Teaching Assistant:

  • Previous experience working with children or young people with SEN in an educational setting.
  • A strong understanding of the challenges faced by students with SEN and effective strategies to support them.
  • A thorough understanding of Autism Spectrum Conditions (ASC), ADHD, and Moderate Learning Difficulties (MLD).
  • Patience, empathy, and the ability to remain calm when managing challenging behaviours.
  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail, particularly when implementing IEPs and tracking student progress.
  • The ability to differentiate learning resources and adapt tasks to meet the needs of each student.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to liaise with teachers, parents, and external agencies.
  • A proactive and flexible attitude, with the ability to adapt to the varying needs of the classroom environment.
  • A relevant qualification in Education, Special Educational Needs, or Childcare is desirable but not essential.
  • A valid DBS registered on the Update Service, or a willingness to apply for one.
