Purpose of the Job

The post-holder will be working as part of a team who will provide the University with security services for its staff, students, visitors and premises. This is a responsible position that requires the post-holder to demonstrate a professional, mature and flexible outlook.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Following laid down procedures and recording activities as required whilst undertaking duties which may include the following:-

Liaising with students, staff and visitors and dealing with general enquiries. Monitoring alarms and responding as per procedure. Performing Fire Alarm Activation Investigation duties in accordance with University procedures. Investigating incidents and reporting findings, issues or key information to Team Leaders & University management and, as required, liaising with the emergency services. Patrolling the University estate, including buildings and grounds and checking the security of premises, perimeters and building contents. Monitoring and operating CCTV. Operating security related equipment as required in line with University policy and departmental procedures (e.g. two-way radios, handheld / tablet technology), ensuring the equipment is maintained and stored correctly and any faults reported to the Team Leader. Driving of University vehicles and undertaking vehicle checks. Patrolling car parks and undertaking the operational aspects of parking management (permit checks, issue of warnings, coordination of reserved spaces, barrier / access controls and directing of traffic on the University estate as per traffic management arrangements in operation and as directed by the Security & Response Manager). Reporting of damage &/or maintenance requirements to the Team Leader. Providing personal protection as required. Transporting / escorting valuables & monies. Issuing and receiving keys, operating telephone switchboard, receiving and transmitting messages, receiving and directing staff, students and visitors. Recording all incidents accurately and in the appropriate format; maintaining and filing information and documents appropriately to provide a clear auditable trail. Updating any scheduled task trackers, activity logs or records as required in the format required. Undertaking duties in a professional manner at all times. Undertaking staff training as required and receiving guidance and instruction from Team Leaders and management. Ensuring all activities are carried out in accordance with University policies and procedures. Acting as a First Aider (in accordance with University procedures). Assisting with the induction, familiarisation and training of new staff.

The above list of job duties is not exclusive or exhaustive and the post holder will be required to undertake such tasks as may reasonably be expected within the scope and grade of the post.

The post-holder may be required to undertake other responsibilities and training as requested by their line manager appropriate to their grade. This job description may be reviewed in the light of changing service requirements and any subsequent changes will be discussed with the post holder. There may be a requirement to change shifts from time to time to meet operational requirements. The post holder will be expected to participate in performance review and developmental activities. The post holder will be expected to attend a medical assessment on an annual basis. The post holder will be expected to comply with the University’s equality policies and statements, Dignity at Work and Study Policy and the University’s Welsh Language Policy. The post holder has a general and legal duty of care in relation to health, safety and wellbeing and must take all reasonable steps to ensure a safe and healthy working environment for themselves and for other members of staff, students and visitors affected by their actions or inactions. The post holder must comply with relevant legal and financial policies and procedures and be aware of their responsibilities in terms of the legal requirements of their posts. The post holder must demonstrate a flexible approach to working within a busy, professional environment. Qualifications/Training

Essential

Minimum of 4 GCSEs or NVQ level 1 (or equivalent) or possess equivalent experience in a similar role.

Desirable

NVQ level 2.

Experience/Knowledge

Essential

Have operational experience of working in security. Proven experience of working as part of a team.

Desirable

Have experience of working in security within an Higher Education environment or within the public sector. Have experience of security working in emergency or escalating situations Possess working knowledge of security systems, such as CCTV, access control. Demonstrate a clear understanding of risk management. Have knowledge of Fire Safety and Health and Safety procedures. Have an understanding of risk management. Experience of logging and accurately recording information, especially relating to incidents. Experience of the efficient handover of key data and intelligence.

Skills/Abilities

Essential

Hold a full driving licence in order to respond across the campus using University vehicles. Demonstrate effective communication skills, both written and verbal. Have an engaging personality with good interpersonal skills. Be reliable and consistent in manner with an ability to remain calm & measured under pressure, especially when dealing with difficult situations. Be customer focused with the ability to respond appropriately in a range of situations, displaying tact and sensitivity when dealing with difficult issues and situations. Demonstrate an ability to receive, understand, digest and relay information in a range of sometimes stressful situations. Demonstrate an ability to take decisions and follow a decisive course of action. Possess competent IT skills, with a working knowledge of Microsoft Office. Must be sufficiently physically fit to undertake the specified duties. High level of self- motivation and personal drive and enthusiasm. The ability to speak Welsh confidently to carry out certain tasks is essential for this post (e.g speaking to staff and students, answering phone calls, dealing with urgent enquiries in Welsh) or have the willingness to learn to speak Welsh to this level within a specified time-frame. This post is subject to a satisfactory enhanced Disclosure & Barring Service check.
