Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a 9 month fixed term contract band 6 pain nurse specialist. There may be the opportunity to extend the contract further at the end of this time frame.

You will have the opportunity to work closely with the rest of the team, observing and then undertaking pain rounds on acute pain inpatients independently.

You will have time to sit in on chronic pain outpatients at QMH so must be able to travel across site. With a view to potentially holding your own clinics in the future.

We provide lots of training in person for patients and staff and you will be expected to participate in delivering this.

Whilst the hours will not be fixed days, we will be looking at most of your shifts being on Wednesday and Friday (Friday being hours). The hours is to be spread over 2 day shifts, which are subject to change of days depending on the service requirements.

Main duties of the job

To manage a caseload of patients/clients experiencing Acute and Chronic Pain

To ensure that patients and their families are fully informed and supported by providing clinical and social support

To establish clear lines of communication written and verbal within the specialty team to ensure cohesive multidisciplinary management of patients

To link with healthcare teams in order to increase knowledge and facilitate the care of this group of people in the community.

Job responsibilities

CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES

To accept responsibility for own patient caseload, ensuring all patients have an accurate plan of care, which reflects the assessment undertaken and incorporates the issues and recommendations made ensuring clear documentation in the patients records and hand held records

To be actively involved in patient care, liaising with ward staff to ensure high quality nursing care

To follow-up patients as appropriate and ensure all relevant information is available to enable patients to make an informed choice about their treatment

To attend and co-ordinate MDT meetings if appropriate to the role ensuring all patients are represented

To deliver a seamless service through the development of enhanced Multidisciplinary team (MDT) processes and communication

To participate in the identification and development of clinical guidelines and strategies to enhance both the continuity and standard of specialist care whilst ensuring equity of access to the service

To participate and undertake the process of relevant operational policies review annually in accordance with national standards

To ensure all care is given in accordance with agreed protocols and guidelines.

To work with key staff members to establish and maintain nurse led inpatient and outpatient services. Providing detailed baseline patient assessment and education and support to patients and their families

To actively involve service users in providing feedback of their experience of the current service and suggestions for improvements.

To provide specialist knowledge and skills eg management / programming of PCA pumps / epidural (PCEA) systems/local anaesthetic and training medical / nursing staff within their scope of practice.

To give a clear and comprehensive handover of information to relevant medical and nursing staff regarding patients under the care of the Pain Services in order to promote continuity in the delivery of the service.

To develop skills to be able to work towards independently holding a chronic pain clinic.

Education and Training

Essential

NMC Level 1 Registered Nurse Mentorship qualification UK recognised degree or working towards Patient centred approach

Desirable

Advanced clinical assessment skills or willingness to develop these Relevant post-registration qualification Experience of running research and audit programmes Basic Counselling skills
