Job summary

Are you a passionate paediatric diabetes specialist nurse looking for a new challenge? The Diabetes team at Birmingham Children's Hospital seeks a dedicated Band 7 nurse to join one of the UK's largest paediatric diabetes units, serving over 350 children.

This hybrid role involves delivering expert nursing clinical practice and leading the 'Management of Childhood Diabetes Course (MCDC),' validated at Level 6 by Birmingham City University. The MCDC is a flexible, work-based learning program for healthcare professionals entering the paediatric diabetes field. The successful candidate will have protected time for both clinical and educational duties.

You will provide high-quality clinical practice, lead and develop the MCDC, and engage in innovative diabetes care practices. Working as part of a supportive team, you will contribute to national and international diabetes guidelines and participate in our 7-day service for children, young people, and families.

We seek someone with paediatric diabetes nursing experience and a passion for education. Teaching experience is preferable, but we will support you in attaining a PG Cert in professional teaching if needed.

Main duties of the job

Provide an expert level of nursing practice for Paediatric diabetes, using advanced skills, to shape and develop high quality Paediatric diabetes service across the trust. Design, develop and co-ordinate all aspects of the Management of Diabetes Course (MCDC) in collaboration with Birmingham City University and the diabetes MDT. Support the co-ordination of the Diabetes Nursing team, including nursing staff management and planning for service delivery. Promote excellence in nursing practice through the delivery of advanced nursing care to children and their families. Participate as part of the MDT in facilitating educational programmes for other Trust wide professionals.

Qualifications

Essential

NMC registration - child branch Qualification in the management of childhood diabetes course Knowledge, experience and competence in paediatric diabetes nursing, significant band 6 level experience Evidence of completion of leadership development package, or equivalent leadership role

Desirable

1st level degree or equivalent Short courses at Masters Level and willingness to work towards an MSc

Knowledge and experience

Demonstrate experience of working with children and young people with Diabetes Expert knowledge of paediatric diabetes Proven experience of teaching HCP's, children and young people Proven ability to manage own and team members workload Ability to demonstrate knowledge of local and national policy/reviews relating to service provision for children requiring diabetes care

Demonstrate an understanding of the audit/research process, and relevance to clinical practice Evidence of application of clinical judgement and decision making to ensure patient careand safety Self-motivated and creative thinker Ability to prioritise workload

Professional and managerial

Competent to assess, manage and instigate insulin therapies and titrate insulin accordingly Competence and experience in blood glucose management Is able to initiate, manage, troubleshoot devices including but not limited to insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitoring systems Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint Ability to educate and present in a variety of formats
