Main duties of the job

Early intervention and individualised infant care, using a Family Integrated Care approach on the Neonatal Unit (NNU) aims to reduce the developmental risks for infants born prematurely or with perinatal problems.

As the Specialist Neonatal Physiotherapist you will:

Utilise advanced skills and support to facilitate high quality, individualised care to infants and parents/carers in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team, at all times ensuring that the needs of the infant and their family are placed at the centre of care delivery. Demonstrate active participation and leadership in projects and activities that support developmental care and the unit's priorities. Be engaged in clinical evaluation and audit activity in partnership with the wider AHP/Unit team. Demonstrate a commitment to evidence based practice

This post supports both our in-patient Neonatal units at QMC and City campus where you will be required to work cross-site.

You may have a small Out-patient caseload but as the role and service develops there may be opportunity for this to develop further.

As part of the wider Childrens Physiotherapy Therapy team you will support a rostered respiratory weekend and out of hours service to support. You will approximately work 1 weekend day every 4 weeks pro-rata, as well as on-call duties if required.

The Nottingham Children's Hospital (NCH) is based at the Queens Medical Centre campus and is part of Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH). We provide In-patient and out-patient care for children up to the age of 19 years old.

The Children's Therapy team at NCH is a friendly and supportive department who work closely alongside the wider MDT, providing excellent evidence based care and innovative ways of working.

Throughout NUH we have a diverse range of AHP and support staff who work together to deliver the high quality care we aspire to supported by our Chief AHP to lead us on our strategic direction.

You will be supported to access; relevant training and learning opportunities, supervision, and support from the East Midlands Operational Delivery Network for Neonates.

Job responsibilities

To provide a highly specialised Neonatal physiotherapy service:

To take a lead role within the paediatric physiotherapy team, providing advanced Neonatal Physiotherapy assessment and treatment of infants at risk of neuro developmental sequalae & to use specialist skills to effectively manage caseload, work priorities including service delivery, patient and professional demands. To be a source of expertise, to identify, analyse, evaluate and problem solve to enable the development and delivery of individualised intervention and treatment programmes in a variety of settings. To provide a consultative role for relatives and staff providing advice, recommendations, support, training, and instruction as identified. To support developmental care practices and a family integrated care approach on the neonatal unit. To undertake all aspects of clinical duties as an autonomous practitioner, managing and prioritising own caseload and time. Maintain appropriate records and data inputting. To liaise with the extended physiotherapy team, and Allied Health Professionals, to ensure optimal management of specific conditions such as talipes, brachial plexus injury and other congenital abnormalities. And to ensure timely referrals are made to associated services to continue developmental surveillance and early intervention as appropriate. To deliver training to multi-disciplinary team members ensuring competence in performing duties within their agreed scope of practice. To undertake Evidence Based audit and research projects to improve services & clinical practice. Leading the implementation of specific changes to practice / contributing to service protocols, within own specialist area. To develop and maintain effective and collaborative working relationships with parents/carers ward staff, other Allied Health Professionals including the East Midlands Neonatal Operational Delivery Network.

Training & Qualification

Essential

BSc Hons (or equivalent) Physiotherapy Health and Care Professional Council (HCPC) registration Recognised post-graduate training relevant to specialty preferably including MSc or completed modules

Experience

Essential

Wide ranging and extensive experience of working within specialist area Knowledge of current best practice within a clinical specialty

Communication and relationship skills

Essential

Able to discuss treatment options and recommend best course of intervention to patients and carers using negotiating, persuasive, motivational and reassurance skills Communicate complex patient related information effectively to ensure collaborative working with MDT colleagues across health & social care sectors

Analytical and Judgement skills

Essential

Analyse information from clinical assessments and make judgements about appropriate interventions for highly complex patients Able to make decisions about the treatment needs of highly complex patients Lead on the development of improvements in service delivery and clinical practice using evidence based practice to recommend changes

Planning and organisation skills

Able to plan the delivery of a service for a specialist area where there is variable capacity and fluctuating demand Able to organise and plan the activity of staff and self

Physical skills

Essential

Able to handle and move complex patients safely and in a way which promotes rehabilitation if applicable. Able to use and/or manoeuvre a range of medical devices including, for example, handling/assistive and anthropometric equipment if applicable.
