Satellite Centre Lead MPE in External Beam Radiotherapy

This post will be based at the SRU but the post holder will be line managed by the appropriate Radiotherapy Physics section manager at VCC. The post holder will maintain strong links between the Radiotherapy Physics services at SRU and VCC to ensure equity of patient care and streamlined processes across both centres.
The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.
Main duties of the job
- Take responsibility for ensuring the safe delivery of Radiotherapy at the Satellite Radiotherapy Unit (SRU) in conjunction with other Medical Physics
- Experts (MPEs) and senior staff within the Radiotherapy Department.
- Act as the lead MPE under the IR(ME)R 2017 legislation in radiotherapy treatment planning and dosimetry at the SRU.
- Provide specialist advice at MPE level to multidisciplinary teams and provide advice on the most complex patient treatment plans, radiobiology and dosimetric issues.
- As radiation protection supervisor (RPS) under the IRR17 regulations will be responsible for ensuring compliance with IRR17 and the local rules.
- Be responsible for ensuring that all radiotherapy treatment machines, treatment planning systems, CT simulators and associated radiotherapy equipment are commissioned and calibrated accurately and regularly quality assured so that the radiation dose to each and every patient treated at the SRU can be delivered correctly in terms of quantity and position.
- Provide technical advice on radiotherapy systems to multidisciplinary teams.
- Provide expert support for clinical trials and research, acting as the lead MPE for clinical trials at the SRU.
- Be required to produce programmes of work and service reports for the radiotherapy physics service at the SRU.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- Provide specialist advice under break-down conditions to staff of all disciplines whilst working on solutions to the problem.
- Provide highly complex scientific and technical advice on imaging, treatment planning and dosimetric issues to radiotherapy consultants, radiographers, clinical Scientists and clinical Technologists regarding patient external beam radiotherapy.
- Liaise with manufacturers and colleagues at other centres as necessary on issues related to radiotherapy computing systems, treatments, imaging and image optimisation.
- Discuss with clinical staff and patients issues associated with radiotherapy treatment set up, radiobiological, dosimetric and other issues describing complex scientific information and its implications on the patient’s treatment.
- As radiation protection supervisor provide advice on radiation protection (IRR17) compliance to employees of both Velindre University NHS Trust and Aneurin Bevan University Health Board.
- Provide advice on IR(ME)R 17 compliance to employees of both Velindre University NHS Trust and Aneurin Bevan University Health Board.
- Present and disseminate clinical results through oral or poster presentations at local, national and international meetings and conferences and where appropriate prepare papers for publication in scientific journals.

- First degree in physics or related discipline.
- MSc or equivalent in medical physics
- Registration as a Clinical Scientist with the HCPC
- RPA2000 Certificate of Competence to act as an MPE demonstrating knowledge significantly beyond Clinical Registration
- PhD in Medical Physics or similar
- Publication record in radiotherapy physics or related subject.
- Extensive experience in Radiotherapy to MPE level
- Experience of taking a supervisory role
- Specialist experience in the operation of radiotherapy equipment and treatment planning systems and associated QA.
- Able to communicate difficult scientific issues to scientists and non-scientists with good verbal, written and audio-visual production & presentation skills
- Able to demonstrate effective implementation of positive change in service development
