Job Overview

This role is based at the SRU but the post holder will be managed by the Radiotherapy Physics section manager at VCC. Maintaining strong links between the Radiotherapy Physics services at SRU and VCC is essential to ensure equity of patient care and streamlined processes across both centers.

Main Duties of the Job
  • Ensure safe delivery of Radiotherapy at the Satellite Radiotherapy Unit (SRU) in collaboration with other Medical Physics Experts (MPEs) and senior staff within the Radiotherapy Department.
  • Act as the lead MPE under the IR(ME)R 2017 legislation in radiotherapy treatment planning and dosimetry at the SRU.
  • Provide specialized advice at MPE level to multidisciplinary teams and offer guidance on complex patient treatment plans, radiobiology, and dosimetric issues.
  • As a radiation protection supervisor (RPS) under the IRR17 regulations, ensure compliance with IRR17 and local rules.
  • Ensure accurate commissioning, calibration, and quality assurance of all radiotherapy equipment at the SRU to guarantee correct radiation dose delivery to patients.
  • Offer technical advice on radiotherapy systems to multidisciplinary teams.
  • Provide expert support for clinical trials and research, being the lead MPE for clinical trials at the SRU.
  • Create work programs and service reports for the radiotherapy physics service at the SRU.

Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities
  • Provide specialist advice under challenging conditions to staff from all disciplines, working on solutions to problems.
  • Offer complex scientific and technical advice on imaging, treatment planning, and dosimetric issues to radiotherapy consultants, radiographers, clinical scientists, and clinical technologists related to patient external beam radiotherapy.
  • Collaborate with manufacturers and colleagues at other centers as needed on issues concerning radiotherapy computing systems, treatments, imaging, and image optimization.
  • Discuss radiotherapy treatment setup, radiobiological, dosimetric, and other issues with clinical staff and patients, explaining complex scientific information and its implications on treatment.
  • Provide advice on radiation protection compliance to employees of Velindre University NHS Trust and Aneurin Bevan University Health Board.
  • Offer advice on IR(ME)R 17 compliance to employees of Velindre University NHS Trust and Aneurin Bevan University Health Board.

Person SpecificationQualifications and KnowledgeEssential Criteria
  • First degree in physics or related discipline.
  • MSc or equivalent in medical physics.
  • Registration as a Clinical Scientist with the HCPC.
  • RPA2000 Certificate of Competence to act as an MPE, demonstrating knowledge beyond Clinical Registration.
Desirable Criteria
  • PhD in Medical Physics or similar.
  • Publication record in radiotherapy physics or related subject.
ExperienceEssential Criteria
  • Extensive experience in Radiotherapy to MPE level.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Specialist experience in the operation of radiotherapy equipment and treatment planning systems with associated quality assurance.
Skills & AttributesEssential Criteria
  • Efficient communication of scientific issues to both scientists and non-scientists with strong verbal, written, and audio-visual presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to implement positive changes in service development effectively.
