Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Practice Nurse who is enthusiastic, motivated and striving to deliver excellent patient care to join our friendly and expanding Practice Nursing team.

The successful candidate would be expected to work across all three sites: Estuary View Medical Centre, Chestfield Medical Centre and Whitstable Medical Centre.

We are looking for a Practice Nurse to work 30 or more hours and working pattern can be discussed at interview stage.

Main duties of the job

The main duties will include assessment and treatment of patients, please see the job description for more information.

You will also need to be a team player, have a flexible approach, excellent communication and decision making skills.

Newly qualified nurses will be considered.

Salary will be dependent on experience. The NHS pension is also offered.

Whitstable Medical Practice is a forward thinking single practice Primary Care Network (PCN) GP Practice based across 3 sites in Whitstable. There are 26 equity partners and 6 salaried GPs looking after over 43,500 patients. We pride ourselves on our innovative approach to Primary Care. We are a training practice and run various in house contracts including Cataract surgery, Ultrasound, Dermatology, Physical Therapies and Audiology together with further community contracts, a Day Surgery Suite and an Urgent Treatment Centre with Digital x-ray.

Job responsibilities

Job Purpose:

The practice nurse will providecare for the presenting patient from initial history taking, clinicalassessment, diagnosis, treatment and evaluation of their care. The practice nurse should demonstrate safe,clinical decision making and expert care for patients within generalpractice. They will workcollaboratively with the multi-disciplinary general practice team to meet theneeds of patient, supporting the delivery of policy and procedures.

Job responsibilities mayinclude:

To provide basic and higher levels ofnursing care as needed for patients.

To provide care for wounds, ear irrigation,venepuncture, ECGs and 24 hour ECG/BP equipment etc.

Dealing with patients as they present routinelyor as emergencies, assessing patients individual needs and treatment orreferring as appropriate.

Immunisations and vaccinations.

Helping with guidance and training of studentnurses.

Accurately recording all results on the computerand ensuring familiarity and understanding of the requirements of the GMS/PMScontract.

Assisting with meeting QOF targets.

Being familiar with emergency equipment andprocedures, maintaining a high standard of safety at all times with regard tochecking equipment and drugs and restocking and servicing as necessary.

Being familiar with local infection controlprocedures.

Being aware of Treatment Room protocols andtaking part in their regular updating.

Ensuring that patients are treated with dueregard to privacy and confidentiality.

Liaising with nurse colleagues and doctors wherenecessary.

The list of duties is notexhaustive, and may change as demand dictates. At times the nurse may be called upon to do extra cover at holidaytimes, for example, or occasionally extra immunisation campaigns will beneeded, for example during the flu season.

The nurse is accountable for herown actions at all times according to the code of conduct laid down by theNMC. The nurse must recognise theimportance of not working beyond their own scope of training or competence, if unsure how to deal with a situation or medical problem you must seekthe help of a more senior colleague, Doctor or Practice Manager, whichever ismore appropriate.

As the nurse develops her skillsit may be appropriate with the Lead Nurse, to appraise their performance, usingthe current career pathway as a guide recognising the nurse may progresstowards becoming a more skilled practitioner.

This may include running clinicssuch as diabetes, asthma, CHD, family planning, smear taking, minor illness,INR and spirometry.

Qualifications

Essential

Registered General Nurse with current NMC registration. Newly qualified Nurses will be considered.

Experience

Essential

Competency in basic nursing duties required for the role Specific nursing skills/qualifications

Desirable

Experience of INR, family planning, cervical cytology, immunisation, travel clinic and chronic disease management Knowledge of EMIS
