Job description

Job responsibilities

Cellular Pathology services have been integrated across East Kent for several years. Laboratory services are based at the WHH, Ashford. We provide histopathology, non-gynaecological cytology and autopsy services to EKHUFT and general practitioners within the region.

Cellular pathology is known for its strong team spirit and open friendly culture. There is great emphasis on cross communication between the technical and diagnostic teams.

Cellular pathology as a whole, including mortuary staff, incorporates a team of 84 staff. From consultant pathologists, to assistant healthcare scientists. From consultant biomedical scientists reporting alongside the consultants, to admin support and clerical staff. The diversity of staff within the discipline is all incorporated into the management of the quality of service offered, with the aim of putting the patient first.

The cellular pathology service is UKAS accredited to ISO15189 standards and the mortuary service appropriately HTA accredited.

The Senior BMS Laboratory Lead will be a key member of the team charged with overseeing the throughput of workflow through the main histopathology laboratory. The objective is that the Laboratory becomes more effective in both time management and quality management and meets both regulatory and accreditation requirements.

The position is designed to minimise the time between tissue dissection and the issuing of diagnostic slides to reporting staff, so as to effectively maximise the time available to pathologists to meet the turn-around-time expectations prescribed by the Royal College of Pathologists.

The Laboratory Lead will have the skills and ability to promote quality and effective training strategies and within all areas of the Department. Modern methods of Quality Management and process control are central to effective Pathology services. They are also vital to the clinical governance of and risk management within the service

The expectations of the role within the wider discipline and pathology department are:

Take technical charge of the microtomy and staining sections of the laboratory

Supervising all Healthcare Scientists and ensuring standard operating procedures and policies are followed.

Promote effective team working of staff within Cellular pathology, to ensure optimal throughput and maintenance of expected turn-around times for histological processes.

To embed, section cut and stain routine, skin and biopsy specimens to a high standard of quality.

Contribute to the attainment and maintenance of Clinical Pathology Accreditation and Good Laboratory practice.

Responsible for the adherence to, and review of, standard operating procedures.

Achievement of satisfactory quality assurance both internal and external ( NEQAS) to the satisfaction of the Heads of Service.

Responsible for the training and development of staff in Cellular Pathology, ensuring up to date training logs and the continuous professional development of Healthcare Scientist and support grades,

Ensure that all equipment is adequately maintained with up to date maintenance records being available.

Perform performance review and appraisal of staff as directed by Head BMS in conjunction with the Chief BMS.

Participate in the development of the Cellular Pathology service supporting new initiatives to improve the efficient running of the department.

Participate in educational programmes for medical, nursing and scientific staff within the Trust and for students attending colleges and universities. This may involve work outside normal working hours.

To participate in continuous professional development, CPD and attend training courses as required to maintain personal professional competence. This may include working off site and flexible hours.

Ensure optimal usage of consumables, reagents and other items, minimising waste and promoting efficient and common stocks of goods within the directorate.

Participate in the development of new techniques and equipment.

Ensure compliance with all Health and Safety and COSHH requirements, maintaining safe working practices and records in the laboratory.

To work in high temperature areas as required whilst still maintaining Standard Operating Procedures and Health and Safety Guidelines.

In conjunction with other senior staff ensure effective communication contributing to the development of a Directorate ethos whilst developing and promoting Cellular Pathology services.
