More detail about the role:

As an Accredited Clinical Coder you will have experience of coding a variety of specialties that occur within an acute NHS organisation. You will have a flexible and adaptable approach to work and strive to create accurate clinically coded data, embracing the national clinical coding standards, rules and conventions, to ensure the Trust data is sufficiently robust.

The Clinical Coding Team is responsible for the extraction and translation of inpatient Clinical information using the ICD- and OPCS-4 Coding Classifications. This information is essential for the effective management of the Trust and crucial to the National Tariff Payment System that underpins Trust income. Coded data is also important for clinical audit, governance and research.

The post-holder will be responsible for the clinical coding of inpatient and day-case episodes across all specialties provided at Royal Devon University Healthcare Hospitals.

The post involves liaising with Clinicians and Clinical teams on a regular basis to verify data recorded in the Electronic Patient Record.

The post holder will contribute positively towards the development of the novice clinical coders, will act as mentor to and assist in the training of less experienced coders.

As a department we can offer staff a comprehensive training and development structure through strong leadership, an in-house training and audit programme with continued professional development for our staff developing existing skills and learning new ones.

Applications will be considered from ACC qualified coders only and you must demonstrate experience of coding across a wide range of specialities for an acute NHS Trust as well as evidence of attending a refresher course in the last 3 years.

We will be delighted to receive applications from ACC qualified Clinical Coders who live outside the geographical area of Royal Devon who are interested in remote working.

Working Pattern: hours per week. As a team we offer a flexible approach to working. A combination of site based and fully remote opportunities are available. Working patterns can be varied to suit individual personal commitments and a healthy work/life balance.

Interview Date: To be confirmed.

For further information please contact: Lauren Omand, Clinical Coding Service Manager on

Preference will be given to staff with ‘Priority’ and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon.

The Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust reserves the right to close vacancy when sufficient applications have been received.

The Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust was established in April 2, bringing together the expertise of both the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust and Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust.
