Daldowie Craft Engineering Apprentice
Modern Engineering Apprenticeship
Salary - £12,613
Location: Daldowie Waste Derived Fuel Processing Plant
Closing date: 1st April 2024
At Drax we believe in developing the skills of our employees and we recognise the contribution that apprentices can make to a business, that is why we invest in a 4-year modern apprenticeship program. We are looking for people like you to join us in August 2024.
You’ll spend the first-year training at our training provider, East Kilbride Group Training Association near Glasgow, Monday to Friday. We’ll reimburse the cost of transport to get you there and back each week and a nice place to stay when you’re there so you can focus on your studies.
Here you’ll start your Modern Apprenticeship in Engineering. You’ll then spend the next 3 years working at Daldowie Waste Derived Fuel Processing Plant, learning from experienced craftspeople and technicians. By the end of the 4 years, you’ll come out with an SVQ level 3 in Engineering Maintenance and a NC in Engineering.
About the Role
There’s no such thing as a typical day as an apprentice as it’ll vary depending on what year you’re in, and what team you’re working with. But, to give you a bit of an idea you can expect to provide maintenance on Drax mechanical, electrical or control and instrumentation bits of our plant. Then next you might be learning to read and interpret technical drawings to make sure you’re fixing the right bit of kit.
Ultimately, you’ll be learning to be responsible and accountable for the plant, and its equipment and systems. But that’s not all, you’ll also be learning to solve problems safely, logically, quickly, and confidently. Further training and development are a key part of your career journey at Drax as well, and this comes in many forms such as on the job training, working at different sites, or further qualifications.
You’ll be joining a large team of experienced and trainee engineers. So, you’ll get all the knowledge of our highly skilled long serving engineers, alongside all the advice, friendship, and support of your apprentice colleagues. There will also be opportunities for short secondments to other power stations within the Drax group.
What we’re looking for …
You’ll need (or be predicted to achieve) a minimum National 5 grades C and above in English, Maths, a Technical subject and a Science subject. (You’ll need to prove these before you start so make sure you keep your certificates handy).
As well as getting the right grades, we’ll also be looking for candidates with good communication skills who can work as part of a team.
About Drax
We are one of the largest energy generators in the UK, with our Hydro sites in Scotland and main site in North Yorkshire covering 13 square miles. That means there are a lot of complex and interesting structures to work on, not to mention some of the new ones in the pipeline.
We’re at our best when we share inspiration and insight right across Drax, and search for new ideas and ways of working. We welcome applications from everyone and hire great people to build talented and diverse teams.
What happens next?
Once you click “apply,” you’ll be taken through our application questions and adding your CV is optional.
Remember, we want to get to know you as an individual, so don’t forget to let us know your motivations and aspirations as well as why Drax sparked your interest. This apprenticeship will start August 2024.
