Job summary

This is a locum 3 Programmed Activity (PA) position within the department of Paediatrics. The trust is looking for a Consultant Community Paediatrician to join a team of 6 other Community Paediatricians working within an integrated specialist children's service in a progressive Community Paediatric department on a fixed term basis.

The post holder will be required to partake in delivering an integrated based Paediatric service with specialist responsibility involving multi agency working with health, education, and social care partners. Whilst this is being advertised as a generic Community paediatric consultant post, the post holder will be actively encouraged to develop interest and lead the services for autism and /or other sub-speciality areas.

Main duties of the job

There is a full range of community paediatric services overseen by three full time and three part time Consultant Community Paediatricians and one experienced associate specialist.

There is a well-resourced Child Development Centre and clinics are delivered through the CDC, GP centres, special schools and hospital site. A number of multidisciplinary team meetings happen each week at the CDC. There is a weekly panel meeting to triage and allocate referrals to the services. Referrals are accepted from GPs, Health Visitors, CAMHS and school nurses. There are 8 special schools in Walsall for physical, mental and emotional disabilities and three mainstream schools with Enhanced Resource Provision.

Community Paediatricians provide Child protection on call (currently 1-6 pm Monday-Friday.

Clinical photography is available via Medical Illustration Department on 24/7 basis throughout the year.

Community Paediatricians provide EHCP clinics (Education Health Care Plan) and special school clinics as well.

There is a monthly Autism Peer review panel conducted by the consultant Community paediatricians to discuss complex cases of autism, ADHD etc

The team also participate in the weekly departmental Grand rounds with presentation of cases of interest and learning as well as Audit presentations.

The community team have a monthly service meeting and also take part in the Departmental Governance meetings monthly.

Key Responsibilities

The appointee will be expected to:

Work with other consultants to provide an integrated paediatric service with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of common general and community paediatric referrals. These will include childhood neurobehavioral problems and a wide range of neurodevelopmental issues and neurodisability including children within special schools. The post holder will be active in preparing Advance care plans (ACP) for children in their care if relevant and required. The post holder will be expected to develop and lead the services for autism and also help in managing the pathway for autism in Walsall. The candidate will be given further opportunity and support to develop expertise in an area of their own interest and choice within the remit of the local needs of community paediatric services. This will include participation at Multidisciplinary team meetings at the Child Development Centre and elsewhere as indicated. Provide medical care to special schools children with physical disabilities /emotional behavioural problems (if required). Assess children with Neurodevelopmental problems which includes assessment of children for ASD and ADHD. Clinics are held at various Health Centers. Provide supervision and training of junior medical staff rotating to community or assisting with child protection medicals Provide prospective cover for colleagues for purposes of annual, study and professional leave. This is currently arranged by exchange of on-call duties for child protection Participate in the established teaching programme for junior doctors and medical students. Act as Educational or Clinical Supervisors for junior doctors in future if necessary. Ensure that they receive appropriate mandatory training and Health & Safety and Risk Management training commensurate with the range and level of work to be undertaken Take personal responsibility for maintaining a high quality of service and ensure evidence-based practice by participating in the College CPD scheme Attendance at Multidisciplinary Panels at the CDC and Community Paediatric referral Panels Participate in on-going multi-disciplinary clinical audit and research activity Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

MBChB or equivalent degree MRCPCH or equivalent Valid registration and license to practice with General Medical Council (GMC) Evidence of being on GMC Specialist Register for Paediatrics/Community Paediatrics or be within six months of being admitted to the Register

An appropriate higher qualification in a discipline related to paediatrics

Experience

Essential

Broad range of community paediatric knowledge and experience at middle grade level or higher level

Desirable

Experience in Community Paediatrics at Consultant level
