Job summary

This patient facing role is at the forefront of the NHS national screening programme, ensuring those patients with diabetes are regularly checked to delay sight deterioration or loss.

It is expected that the successful candidate will operate across Hertfordshire and even into West Essex

Main duties of the job

To undertake assigned screening clinics as directed by the Programme Management to ensure the effective running of the Hertfordshire and West Essex Diabetic Eye Screening Programme.

To liaise with administrative and medical staff to identify and discuss any patients with specific needs (, hearing difficulties, limited mobility) to ensure all resources are available.

To competently prepare the patient (including instillation of mydriatic eye drops) and take Retinal photographs of sufficient quality to meet the National Quality Assurance Standard.

To be proficient in grading of images for feedback to the patient and their GP and undertake regular national standards audit.

Job description

Job responsibilities

To be able to stand for long periods during clinics, and carefully manoeuvre expensive screening equipment. Some patient handling will be necessary (training provided).

To manage consumable supplies to deliver clinic activity, including mydriatic eye drops.

To operate autonomously at an assigned clinic, liaising with venue staff to manage patient appointments.

To make decisions and judgements based on the information provided by the patient, recorded actions, and contemporaneous notes on the clinical system OptoMize and referring to the Team Leader for advice where necessary.

To be aware that patients emotions can fluctuate due to their condition, managing this in a sensitive and caring manner.

To attend and contribute to regular Team/MDT meetings and supervision sessions with the team and clinical leads and complete the necessary mandatory training.

Person Specification

Candidate Requirements

Essential

A professional qualification in a health/social related discipline or educated to a minimum of 5 GCSE's (or equivalent) standard Computer literate (use of specific system software after training, email, Word, Excel) Previous experience of eye screening is not essential as full training will be provided, but the candidate must be willing to work towards a recognised diploma course in Diabetes Eye screening Exchanges information with patients and carers using tact and persuasion; there may be communication difficulties Screener/grader staff are required to hold a full, valid, UK driving licence and have access to a car to use with business insurance (unless the member of staff has a disability as defined by the Equality Act 2010)
