Job Overview:

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate 1:1 Youth Worker to support a Key Stage 2 student  aged 10, with a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), sensory processing difficulties, attention and concentration difficulties and delayed fine motor skills.

 The successful candidate will work closely with the student to support his reintegration into the classroom by implementing a structured and supportive approach tailored to his individual needs. This role is vital in helping the student achieve his educational goals while minimising risks to himself and others.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Individualised Support: Provide consistent, personalised 1:1 support to the student, focusing on his specific needs and strengths.
  • Emotional Regulation: Implement strategies to help the student manage his emotions, including the use of sensory tools, quiet spaces, and self-regulation techniques.
  • Boundary and Transition Management: Support the students through transitions and help him understand and adhere to boundaries, using visual schedules, verbal reminders, and positive reinforcement.
  • Social Skills Development: Facilitate structured opportunities for social interaction, role-playing, and the use of social stories to enhance the student's social skills.
  • Learning Engagement: Work with the student to integrate his interests into learning tasks, providing alternatives for non-preferred activities, and breaking down tasks into manageable steps.
  • Sensory Sensitivity Management: Create and maintain a sensory-friendly environment, providing tools such as noise-cancelling heads and sensory breaks as needed.
  • Risk Mitigation: Monitor and address any risks associated with emotional dysregulation, harmful sexualized behaviours, and physical safety by following established mitigation strategies and safeguarding protocols.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with therapy teams, support staff, and multidisciplinary teams to ensure a consistent approach to the student care and education.
  • Documentation: Maintain detailed records of the student progress, incidents, and any adaptations to his support plan. Contribute to regular reviews and meetings with the multidisciplinary team and the student family.
Essential Qualifications and Skills:
  • Experience in Special Needs Education: Previous experience working with children with ASD, sensory processing difficulties, and complex behavioural needs.
  • Knowledge of Safeguarding Protocols: Understanding of and experience with safeguarding procedures, particularly in managing harmful behaviours.
  • Behaviour Management: Proficiency in implementing behaviour management strategies, including crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques.
  • Communication Skills: Strong verbal and non-verbal communication skills, with the ability to use alternative communication methods (e.g., visual schedules, social stories).
  • Patience and Empathy: A patient, empathetic approach to supporting children with special needs, with the ability to build trust and rapport.
  • Organisational Skills: Ability to maintain detailed records, manage time effectively, and adapt plans as needed.
  • Physical Fitness: The ability to perform physical interventions if necessary (with training provided).
Desirable Qualifications and Skills:
  • Relevant Qualifications: In education, special education, child care, or a related field.
  • Positive Behaviour Support  Training: Certification in crisis intervention, such as Sherwood (Management Deescalation,  Actual or Potential Aggression).
  • Therapeutic Experience: Experience working alongside or with therapeutic professionals, such as occupational therapists or speech and language therapists.
  • Knowledge of ASD Subgroups: Understanding of demand avoidance behaviours and strategies to support children within this subgroup of ASD.
  • Adaptability: Flexibility in approach and willingness to adapt strategies to meet the student evolving needs.
