Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Diabetes Specialist Nurse to join the Diabetes Specialist Nursing Team at Royal Papworth Hospital.

The successful applicant will work with the team and other members of the multidisciplinary team, in the support, education and management of people with diabetes. They will be working in a tertiary setting caring for people with complex cardiac or respiratory conditions, as well as those undergoing Cardiothoracic Surgery or transplantation. The successful applicant will be responsible for joint management of the diabetes caseload and should expect to work across the Royal Papworth Hospital site.

They will also be expected to contribute to the organisation and delivery of ongoing diabetes education and training for other health care professionals and be expected to participate in the development and instigation of local diabetes care strategies and guidelines. There will be the opportunity to develop or enhance their knowledge and skills in specialist service areas Cystic Fibrosis related diabetes, steroid induced diabetes in transplant patients.

Good communication and time management skills are essential, including supporting busy clinics, receiving and managing referrals and the ability to work on your own initiative and with a diverse group of people

Main duties of the job

*The post holder is responsible for providing high quality diabetes care to patients.

*Responsible for assessing, planning, and implementing specialist nursing care programmes in collaboration with the Diabetes and clinical teams.

*Responsible for providing specialist advice and support to staff.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

Registered nurse. Level 3 diabetes qualification, or willingness to complete. Evidence of continuous professional development. Teaching or mentoring qualification.

Desirable

Degree Advanced clinical assessment or willingness to undertake. Willingness to undertake non-medical prescribing course in the future.

Experience

Essential

Demonstrate understanding and knowledge of diabetes. Demonstrate expert nurse skills. Evidence of mentorship and preceptorship role. Experience of teaching staff and patients. Accept personal accountability for own practice. Demonstrate good verbal and written communication skills. Good interpersonal skills. Demonstrate good information technology skills including EXCEL. Ability to work and manage own workload unsupervised. Flexible and adaptable to facilitate service needs. Ability to work in and liaise with a multidisciplinary team.

Desirable

Experience in diabetes. Experienced with insulin pumps and sensor technology. Knowledge of structured education programmes DAFNE and DESMOND. Experience in audit and presentation. Leadership skills. Cardio/thoracic experience.
