London, UK, United Kingdom NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY Full time

The National Portrait Gallery is looking to recruit a Digital Learning and Content Manager to help cement and grow the Gallery’s digital learning offer. This is an exciting opportunity to lead on the management of and content development for Schools hub, the Gallery’s flagship online learning resource hub designed for key stages 1–5 students studying Art & Design and History, which launched in September 2023. The role will also be pivotal in building on the success of Schools hub through the development of digital programming to grow the offer further across the UK, including working with colleagues on the development of a new digital delivery strand of our Schools programme, and developing new partnerships to increase engagement nationally.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Develop the content strategy and plan for Schools hub, in line with the Schools Learning and Content framework.
  • Create and respond to opportunities to extend the Schools programme’s reach nationally, through digital and strategic activation partnerships, working with colleagues to embed these where relevant.
  • Develop and deliver a new plan for the digital strand of the onsite Schools programme to extend the reach of the offer to teachers and students across the UK.
  • Monitor Schools hub’s performance through the Gallery’s data analytics dashboards, and as part of the Schools evaluation strategy, using the data to inform future development.
  • Be the content and technical lead for the Schools hub online learning resource platform, managing the development, review and editing of new learning resources, and the technical aspects of content population.
  • Advocate for schools and ensure Schools hub and the digital strand of the Schools programme are embedded in the Gallery’s business and logistical operations.
  • Grow our Schools audiences through our various marketing strands, in line with the Schools marketing toolkit and tone of voice guidelines.
  • Support implementation of best practice across the Education, Culture and Heritage sectors, raising the profile of innovative and creative approaches to digital learning at the Gallery.
  • Contribute to funding bids and write reports as required.
  • Manage the commissioning of new learning content, working closely with the wider Schools team, establishing a clear schedule and work plan for contributing curators.
  • Develop and deliver curriculum-linked learning resources for schools, enabling remote engagement with the Gallery’s Collection to grow the Gallery’s national reach and to support the on-site learning offer for schools.
  • Convene, manage and seek advice from external content advisors and critical friends as needed, to add expertise to resource and programme design.
  • Ensure that design and content is relevant and appropriate for audiences through a managed user-testing process.
  • Deliver resources and other strands of work to agreed timescale and budget.
  • Manage the technical aspects of content population, including tagging, alt-text and SEO best practice.
  • Monitor Schools hub’s performance through the Gallery’s data analytics dashboards, including Looker Studio, Site Improve and Microsoft Clarity, compiling regular reports on key data and trends.
  • Implement Accessibility best practice across all learning content.
  • As part of the wider Schools evaluation strategy, use the data, along with periodic user testing, resource review and evaluation, to inform future development.
  • Work with the Digital team to monitor and problem-solve any technical issues that may arise.
  • Work with the Head of Learning and Schools Programme Manager to grow our schools audiences through our various marketing strands, including writing copy for eNews and social media, in line with the Schools marketing toolkit and tone of voice guidelines, as needed.
  • Ensure all learning content adheres to agreed style guides, tone of voice guidelines and best practice parameters.
  • Follow agreed processes for images rights and clearances.
  • Contribute to funding bids and write reports as required.
  • Promote sustainable working practices to reduce the environmental impact of the Gallery’s operations in line with its Sustainability Statement.
  • Ensure GDPR compliance across the post holder’s area of responsibility.
