Through social media amplification and Licensing & Syndication partnerships, the brand delivers total views in excess of 12 billion on an annual basis.


The marketing and CRM team:

The marketing and CRM team is on a mission to influence reader behaviours and perceptions by delivering meaningful campaigns to our readers. We’re currently in the early stages of a long-term strategy that is focused on utilising reader data to influence reader engagement as part of the subscription journey. We also provide critical marketing services for our sister publication, The Evening Standard, as well as the commercial arms of the business.


One of our team will soon be on maternity leave, so we’re on the lookout for a new Senior CRM Executive to join us and own the delivery of our commercial campaigns and help implement the CRM strategy for reader revenues.


Job purpose:

We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior CRM Executive to join our friendly CRM and marketing team. This role reports directly into the Senior Marketing & CRM Manager and will be assessed on your ability to plan, implement and report on campaigns that drive ongoing engagement, and generate revenue through sponsorship, subscription retention and commercial events across both The Independent and The Evening Standard.


You will be primarily responsible for building, deploying and reporting on commercial campaigns within our Customer Engagement Platform, Braze. You will also work as the key CRM contact for a range of teams, including The Independent’s editorial and commercial teams, and The Evening Standard’s events and commercial teams.


You will be joining us at an exciting time of rapid growth for both The Independent’s reader revenues business and The Evening Standard’s commercial programme, so it is vital that you feel confident managing a varied workload, collaborating closely with multiple stakeholders and managing tight deadlines.


About you:

  • A hands-on CRM specialist with 2+ years’ experience.
  • Strong commercial awareness and can identify opportunities in the market.
  • You know how to build, deploy and test campaigns within a multi-channel customer engagement Experience of CRM retention/engagement strategies.
  • Comfortable conversing with data and commercial teams.
  • Highly motivated, results orientated and eager to learn.


Key responsibilities and accountabilities – what is delivered

  • Assume responsibility for the day-to-day implementation of commercial campaigns across The Independent and Evening Standard, working closely with the CRM Manager.
  • Prepare and distribute regular performance reports for the teams you will collaborate with, including monthly reporting.
  • Work in conjunction with the wider CRM team and commercial teams to coordinate the sponsorship calendar for The Independent’s 28 editorial newsletters and make suggestions to fit clients’ briefs.
  • Write creative briefs and work with the marketing team designer to ensure successful delivery of required campaign assets.
  • Oversee the build of email campaigns, mapping out key deadlines to ensure projects are delivered on schedule.
  • Work alongside The Independent’s and The Evening Standard’s affiliates teams on promoting key ecommerce events, such as Amazon Prime Day and Black Friday, via our newsletters and dedicated marketing promotions.
  • Work with the Evening Standard events team to build and deploy marketing campaigns in support of their events portfolio.
  • Deploy and report on campaigns for the Evening Standard’s commercial partners.
  • Work in collaboration with the Privacy Manager to ensure all campaigns are GDPR compliant.


Skills and experience


Mandatory requirements:

  • Proficient in conceptualising, building and reporting on email campaigns within an ESP or CEP system.
  • Experience in growing a loyalty/subscriber/CRM base.
  • Results-driven mentality, able to continually critique and optimise performance with a positive mindset.
  • Ability to demonstrate a campaign’s performance through data.
  • Confident working with complex audience segmentation.
  • Excellent collaboration skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects to tight deadlines.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Brilliant collaboration skills - able to work cross functionally to drive results.


Desirable requirements:

  • Experience using Braze (Customer Engagement Platform).
  • Experience working closely with commercial teams.
  • Experience working in news, media and publishing.
  • Degree level professional qualification in Marketing or equivalent.
  • Ability to understand and troubleshoot basic HTML/Liquid.
