Purpose of role

We seek an experienced and inspiring Creative Director to lead a team of teaching staff and freelance practitioners in the development of a new range of practical courses for young people and adults. Based in the Bognor Makerspace but with some outreach work, the Creative Director will work closely with other MTGS directors to establish a part-time Traineeship in Puppetry and Production Skills, plus four weekly community classes. The project will culminate in the Bognor Puppet Festival in May 2025 and the Creative Director will be responsible for programming visiting artists as well as producing in-house performances.

A key element of the Bognor programme is a one-year, part-time Traineeship in Puppetry and Production Skills funded by Arts Council England which will be aimed particularly at neuro-divergent 16-25 year olds who have not achieved a Level 3 qualification and who may be struggling with conventional curriculum.

Key Responsibilities

  • To develop the creative strategy for the new Traineeship course working closely with the MTGS directors and a range of artists and practitioners.
  • To plan the curriculum and individual lesson plans supporting other tutors and being mindful of specific learning difficulties so a range of learning styles can be accommodated.
  • Working closely with the Makerspace resident wellbeing team, to be welcoming and inclusive to a diverse and interesting range of learners, occasionally dealing sensitively and appropriately with complex and challenging issues that may present.
  • To manage the creative, marketing and admin staff engaged in the project.
  • To assist the board with developing and reviewing the budget, meeting targets.

About Us

Our methodology involves a combination of professional work experience, creative skills training and supported employability, focused on activities that are both practical and purposeful. Utilising a unique and ingenious pop-up theatre, the participants engage in a variety of tasks, helping them become more confident and resilient. We focus on high-quality theatre outcomes, with finished shows presented to early-years audiences in schools or in the community, and made with the involvement of highly-skilled designers, dramaturgs and technicians.

In recent years the company has focused on puppetry and the opportunities for our participants to gain more advanced skills. Puppetry has expanded significantly over the last 20 years and, alongside established small-scale theatre touring, has moved into new sectors such as TV/film, gaming, stop-motion animation and advertising. Our research has identified potential entry-level routes where non-graduates can be employed in (for example) art departments supporting scenic art and prop-making.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience of producing creative projects to a high standard, either in an educational or theatre setting
  • Strong organisational skills including the ability to plan and prioritise own work
  • Excellent communication skills - both written and verbal.
  • Flexible and adaptable to new situations and able to motivate and inspire others
  • Knowledge of a range of technical skills

Desirable

  • Ability to develop and implement an effective learning programme
  • Lived experience or knowledge/ background in neurodivergent and/or mental health sectors
  • Working in partnership, ideally within a community environment
  • Professional experience of working in puppetry
