About the job
We are looking for a communications professional with media and press handling experience who wants to make a difference to communities across West Sussex.

As a Senior Press Officer in the Communications & Engagement Team, you’ll be responsible for planning and delivering a year-round programme of communications, primarily for our Adult Services and Public Health directorate, as well as supporting the team as a whole.

You’ll be delivering communications through a number of different channels including digital and social media platforms, engaging closely with local, regional and national news and other media outlets, and supporting internal communications to staff.

Key to the role is your ability to tell a strong, compelling story of our improvement journey, especially the work we’re doing across the County Council in West Sussex to improve outcomes for children, young people and their families.

Working on several challenging an interrelated projects at one time, you will provide an effective media handling and communications service, ensuring the County Council’s messages are open and transparent

The job involves extensive relationship building with a variety of internal and external teams, partners and stakeholders.

You will be required to participate in an out-of-hours on-call rota, for which an additional allowance is provided.

What you’ll need to succeed
You’ll need the ability to hit the ground running, with a hands-on and can-do attitude to your work, bringing with you experience of delivering effective communications and media relations skills and knowledge.

Offering a mix of office and remote working, you’ll need to be able to manage your own workload, juggling competing priorities and organising your work to meet deadlines.

You’ll be comfortable making decisions and exercising initiative, developing creative messaging in line with the council’s brand, values and reputation.

You’ll be equally comfortable talking to journalists and senior leaders, handling media enquiries and requests while representing the needs and best interests of the County Council and the communities we serve.

Required experience and skills
(These will be used as the shortlisting criteria)
Key Skills**:Excellent communication skills including highly developed written and verbal communication skills, negotiation, and persuasion skills. Ability to assimilate and communicate in a clear manner a variety of complex issues, both concisely and effectively to a range of audiences. Creativity and the ability to translate raw data and complex information into meaningful communications.**
- Excellent sensitivity and diplomacy skills in order to provide confidential and non-partisan advice in what can be a complex political environment. Political insight and understanding, with the ability to establish credibility to work closely with Members and officers at all levels of the service on sensitive and confidential matters.
- Ability to organise and prioritise work, co-ordinate a variety of tasks in a clear and logical way, and meet tight deadlines to minimise the disruption to the business.
- Ability to think creatively and innovatively. Able to adapt to changing situations in a measured and flexible manner. Able to evolve advice and guidance to suit any change in business needs.
- Highly computer literate with sound and accurate IT skills. Able to carry out research, analyse highly complex documents and information, produce reports and create electronic presentations.
- A thorough understanding and ability to use digital media and equipment to film, edit, create content and post on social media channels.

Qualifications and/or experience:

- National Council Training for Journalists (NCTJ) or similar journalistic qualification (equivalent to graduate level), or have experience demonstrating a thorough understanding of media activities and communication styles.
- CIPR Diploma in Public Relations or equivalent qualification - **_Desirable _**:

- Significant experience working as a journalist, press officer or communications officer producing high quality accurate and timely communications which are fit for purpose for a range of audiences and channels.
- Thorough working knowledge of the wider environment, the functions and structure
