Diabetic Eye Screening Health Care Assistant 15 hours per week

The Cumbria Diabetic Eye Screening Programme screens over 26,000 patients (and increasing) each year in various community and acute locations throughout Cumbria. Screening takes place in GP practices, health centres, community and acute hospitals. Screening is performed in static and mobile sites - transporting mobile screening units throughout the county. The service delivers routine annual screening and digital surveillance (closer monitoring for early sight threatening diabetic retinopathy). Digital surveillance also includes the use of Optical Coherence Tomography imaging and analysis. The role of a Retinal Screening Health Care Assistant is essential to support the retinal screener by providing pre-screening for patient in the retinal screening clinic.

Base will be Ulverston, and the post requires the ability to be flexible to cover sites throughout Cumbria as needed to support other teams in the program.

To contribute to the efficient and effective management of the Diabetic Retinal Screening Programme. The post holder will provide a service to help prevent the development of blindness through the early detection and treatment of diabetic retinopathy by providing a high quality systematic screening and grading service throughout Cumbria.

To work with a screener completing the pre-screening process including VA test, ophthalmic history and administration of dilating drops.

To maintain the smooth running of a fast paced clinic whilst maintaining excellent patient care.

The diabetic eye screening team has staff based at Ulverston, Kendal, Carlisle and Whitehaven. Although spread around the county, team work is an important part of the running of the programme.

The team comes together for clinical supervision and team meeting regularly to improve knowledge and skills, share best practice and collectively contribute to the development of service improvements for staff and patients.
