Research Associate in Lightform: High Throughput
2 weeks ago
A Research Associate is sought to help deliver a high-quality research to contribute to a programme grant funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), entitled ‘LightForm Embedding Materials Engineering in Manufacturing with Light Metals’.
The role will be based at The University of Manchester, within the Centre for Light Alloys Research and Innovation (CLARI) in the School of Materials. LightForm is viewed as a strategic investment by EPSRC and aims to strengthen the UK’s scientific research base in advanced manufacturing across the aerospace and automotive sectors, and will work with the prime manufacturers and their supply chain.
LightForm is a 5 year multidisciplinary project with £4.8m in core funding from the EPSRC programme grant scheme, led by The University of Manchester with partners at the University of Cambridge and Imperial College, London.
LightForm’s aim is to provide the enabling science that will allow UK industry to achieve a step-change in the performance of the next generation of wrought, light-alloy, formed components, and innovate in the move to a more sustainable economy and digital simulation in manufacturing.
You will be responsible for delivering high quality research on the topic of microstructure and texture development during hot forming of titanium alloys. You will develop new high throughput techniques of rapid large-area electron back-scatter diffraction to measure the texture and microtexture in hot formed materials, across large data sets and industrial scale components, and correlate this to the texture development and mechanical behavior.
You will be a senior member of the LightForm research team and will be responsible for engaging with other team members to meet the overall objectives of the programme. They will also be responsible for leading the dissemination of the research outcomes in their area (e.g. through high-impact publications), presenting their work at international conferences, and assisting in the supervision of PhD and other research students associated with the programme.
