Research Associate in Exploring The Adaptive

The Division of Evolution, Infection and Genomics within the Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health wish to appoint a Research Associate to an exciting project entitled “Exploring the Adaptive Landscape of Multigenerational Inter-Specific Hybrids to Improve Iso-Butanol Tolerance”.
**During this position, the post-holder will undertake a range of activities including**:
1. Carry out Adaptive Laboratory Evolution of inter-specific yeast hybrids exposed to increasing amount of isobutanol in order to select high-tolerant progeny as new potential production hosts and to confirm that increased genetic diversity enhance adaptation potential to new stressful conditions. This experimental task will require high degree of organisational skills, experience in microbiology, genetic and microbial evolution.
2. Acquire ‘omics data to characterize the main genotypic and transcriptional changes affecting isobutanol tolerance in the meiotic offspring of inter-specific yeast hybrids (identify genes, alleles, promoters, indels, structural variants, and pathways involved in isobutanol tolerance); and validate the role of specific genes/alleles in the parental background. This task will require ability to handle and analyse ’omics data and carry out comparative genomic analysis (computational task), and experience in molecular biology/genetic engineering techniques (experimental task).
3. Using high-throughput robotics to phenotype the adapted inter-specific yeast hybrids under different conditions to determine the presence of cross-protection and trade-offs traits. This task will require a high degree of organisational skills due to the high-throughput phenotyping involved and ability to generate and analysis of large dataset using robotics (experimental and computational tasks).
Ultimately, the post-holder will identify the more valuable hybrids that have acquired isobutanol tolerance with the least trade off in other relevant industrial conditions.
