To deputise in the absence of the Phlebotomy Manager

To work as a member of the Phlebotomy team, obtaining quality blood specimens from adults and children for testing by the Pathology Laboratory.

To provide a safe, efficient, and reliable phlebotomy service to inpatients and outpatients.

To be responsible for the assignment and deployment of the Phlebotomy staff.

To be responsible for phlebotomy staff/ Nurse induction, rotation, training, assessments and competencies in phlebotomy.

To work in accordance with local (Trust) and nationally agreed standards, guidelines, policies, and procedures

To cover Remote Testing service Ad hoc.

Reporting and investigating DATIX incidents.

Using technical equipment to safely draw blood from patients

Explaining the process of drawing blood clearly to a patient

Reassuring and calming patients who might be nervous or scared of the procedure

Registering the blood and storing it in the correct environment

Sending blood samples to testing laboratories

Maintaining an organised and clean work area based on health and safety regulations and the guidelines of the Trust

Answering patient questions regarding collection techniques and offering additional resources on the collection process, if the patient requests them

Stock Keeping of supplies

To provide a paediatric cannulation service as required.

To cover Remote Testing Ad hoc.

To ensure that all specimens are correctly and clearly labelled and that request forms bear the correct and legible patient identification details in accordance with relevant Trust policies and local Phlebotomy standard operating procedures (SOPs).

To ensure that all electronic requests are dealt with according to the standard operating procedures and that identification is carried out according to the Wristband policy.

To carry out patient identification using the EPIC system.

To escalate any problems encountered in procedures and/or equipment to the appropriate individuals

To communicate to the phlebotomy manager any interruption to the service and to convey details of cover and bleep numbers to the wards where there is alteration of the service.

To ensure that phlebotomists record their daily workload statistics, hand in the phlebotomy workload record sheets for analysis on a daily basis and inform the phlebotomy manager of any major charges in workloads.

To assist the phlebotomy manager in the organisation and running of the phlebotomy service including the production of rotas.

To work flexibly, to cover staff absences, as necessary, and to participate in the weekend shift as required,

To liaise with parents, medical, psychology, scientific, administration and nursing staff.

To deliver blood samples to Specimen Reception when necessary.

To maintain high standards of personal appearance at all times

To maintain high standards of professional working practices and behaviours at all times.

Be aware of the procedures involving patient, visitors and staff complaints
