Clinical Transplantation Laboratory, Royal London Hospital, Barts Health

**The Laboratory**: Barts Health NHS Trust serves the City and East London and is associated with the Queen Mary and Westfield School of Medicine and Dentistry. The laboratory is located in a purpose built Pathology building at the Royal London Hospital. We provide a comprehensive service for local and national referral centres in support of kidney, thoracic and some of the largest stem cell transplant programmes in the UK, including for the paediatric programmes at GOSH. We perform the full range of H&I services, including HLA-typing, crossmatching and antibody screening services and other immunogenetic testing as an aid to disease diagnosis.

The post holder will be required to efficiently and methodically perform diagnostic tests related to clinical transplantation. The post holder will maintain paper and electronic records of all such diagnostics tests carried out. The post holder will assist in the day-to-day activities of the laboratory and provide training to staff as required. The post holder will assist in the development and validation of kits, reagents and equipment.

1. Main duties, responsibilities and results areas

The post holder will be required to accurately and efficiently book in samples for and perform diagnostic assays. With appropriate delegated responsibility, assist in the organization and the day-to-day activities of band 3 MTO staff. Core duties will include providing support to Band 3 sample reception staff including sample registration and processing into cells, DNA and serum, as well as undertaking a range of complex clinical technical HLA tests and services, including tissue typing, antibody analysis and crossmatching activities for clinicians on behalf of patients and donors.

Scientific & Technical
- Rotate between the serological and molecular sections and must be competent in all aspects of the laboratory testing
- Be required to accurately and efficiently perform diagnostic assays and analyse test results
- Be required maintain clear, full and accurate records of all work carried out
- Be required to participate in general laboratory duties such as sample processing, specimen archive, stock control, ordering, waste disposal and data entry and retrieval as required
- Be required to provide cover for Band 3 sample reception staff to book-in routine clinical sample received by the laboratory. This will include matching specimens with request forms, numbering specimens and request forms and entering all relevant patient and test details onto the departmental database
- Be required to support Band 3 sample reception staff in sample processing to obtain lymphocyte suspensions, extract DNA from various cell sources and tissues and to separate, aliquot and file serum samples and information
- Be required to perform any other technical or administrative duties as directed
- Be required to liaise effectively with all grades of staff within the laboratory and with those in other departments
