Elective Surgery Pre-operative Assessment

We have band 6 vacancy working across all three sites, which have differing patient populations therefore presenting different exposures and experience. Pre-Operative Assessment is currently conducted via telephone, video and face-to-face appointments. Anatomy and Physiology systems knowledge and accurate nursing assessment of these is paramount and an essential part of this role. Though you would be part of a wider team, on a day-to-day basis you will work autonomously making independent decisions as to a patient’s fitness for anaesthesia and surgery, and be responsible for appropriate referrals both internal and external. The Unit functions closely with the Patient Service Centre, Admissions and Discharge Lounge and a Team of Anesthetists.
3 West Charing Cross is one of our Admissions and Discharge Lounges, this is a very busy department with patient throughput exceeding 20,000+ patients per year, and with more than 50 specialties and one of the largest portfolios of services in the country.
1.To be responsible for assessing the fitness of adult/16 yrs and over patients for elective anaesthesia and surgery at pre-operative assessment clinics at St Mary's, Charing Cross and Hammersmith Hospitals.
2.To independently provide high quality, effective, individualised care to pre-operative patients within the framework of a nurse/HCP-led clinical environment with individual caseload management responsibilities.
3.To initiate the appropriate investigations and services for patients prior to surgery and to liaise with the parent team, anaesthetic service, wards and theatres to ensure a smooth, timely and individualised perioperative pathway for every patient.
4.To address the concerns of patients, relatives, and carers as they arise and take remedial action as required.
5. To ensure that the needs of the patients are placed at the centre of all care.
6.To provide clinical and professional support to the pre-assessment and 3 West teams
7.To monitor standards of nursing/HCP care and take appropriate action to maintain and improve them.

- Autonomous assessment of patients within the pre-operative assessment service
- Health promotion
- Liaison with primary and secondary care teams
- Theatre cancellations and efficiency of the surgical patient pathway
- Efficient smooth functioning of the Admissions & Discharge Lounge
- Continued development of the Pre Operative Assessement and Admissions & Discharge Lounge services.
- In collaboration with the Directorate Educator assess and plan staff development pathways
