**Job summary**:
The UK Hydrographic Office’s Submarine Operations and Support (SOS) Team is recruiting This is a fantastic opportunity to join a highly dynamic, operationally focused team that supports some of the UK’s most important and strategic defence operations. This will involve building a high level of direct engagement with the end user that affords a real window into a world that few outside serving armed forces personnel ever get to see.

The SOS Team is made up of Geospatial Specialists of varying levels of expertise, who curate and deliver services and products for defence and defence customers. This, in short, means presenting information in a format that enables defence customers to make operational, navigational and situational awareness decisions. These customers rely on the products SOS develop in the very real maritime defence domain.

This post is based in Taunton, Somerset, so you’ll need to live within a commutable distance. Please consider any financial implications and practicalities before applying.

**Job description**:
SOS Geospatial Specialists contribute to the production of geospatial products and analyse datasets to meet the defined output, deadlines, cost, quality and security criteria required by the MOD. Post holders maintain close contact with the RN customer to ensure the products and services provided effectively meet the requirement.

New team members will be mentored by more experienced team members as they learn the role and will rotate through data analysis and production tasks in order to become competent in multiple roles and thus better support the often ad-hoc nature of the work of the SOS Team.

**Person specification**:
We are seeking motivated geospatial specialists who are passionate about delivering geospatial products and services to solve real world problems for their customers. You will be a flexible team player who has a genuine desire to work collaboratively as part of a small, dynamic team. Self-motivation and the ability to deliver at pace is also important as being reactive to customer needs is a key aspect of the role.

**Post holders will undertake the following key tasks in order to deliver products/services for the customer**:

- Produce specialist analogue and digital products in support of submarine deployments.
- Analyse data collected as a result of submarine operations, identifying causes of operational issues and enhancements and additions to SOS products.
- Contribute to reports for external customers based on the SOS analysis.
- Maintain quality documentation and enhance the knowledge management capability within SOS.
- Collaborate with teams across the UKHO to ensure efficient sharing and use of maritime data.
- Provide SME input to the SOS refresh project.
- Support innovative approaches to turn data into valuable insights that inform decisions and outcomes.

**Post holders will use these Geospatial capabilities (as identified in the Geography Profession Geospatial Information Specialist and Geographic Analyst skills profiles) in order to carry out their tasks**:

- Geospatial data capture and modelling
- Geospatial Data Analysis
- Geospatial data manipulation
- Geospatial data management
- Cartography and Interactive Mapping
- Geospatial data standards and quality
- Geospatial software, tools and systems
- Capability Building

**Post holders may also undertake the following engagement activities in support of the team**:

- Maintain engagements with SOS primary customers and users ensuring customer feedback, requirements and future developments are identified.
- Represent SOS at external meetings as required.
- Contribute to overviews, briefings, demonstrations and training to RN, external customers and international partners as required.
- Support Task Mangers, Production Managers, SOS Management and Hydrographic Data Group Manager with regular reporting against KPM1, resources, work schedules and issues, and wider UKHO initiatives.

**Post holders will Protect Classified Assets/Data by**:

- Following correct procedures for the secure and authorised dispatch of classified material.
- Managing the secure storage of all classified items within SOS including annual muster.
- Ensuring maintenance of and compliance with physical and computer security orders.
- Maintaining physical access controls ensuring no disclosure of material
