At ISIS we harness the power of particle accelerators to see the sub-atomic; enabling the advancement of knowledge and improvement of lives through science.

ISIS is a facility scientific and research laboratory that provides neutron and muon beams to be used as a tool for researchers in many fields of science and technology.

We have an exciting opportunity for a technically minded individual who has some experience as Health Physics Surveyor. You will be part of the Health Physics Facility Safety (HPFS) Group in ISIS, and as a team-player with excellent interpersonal skills, you will interact with our customers across the RAL site.

Join us and discover what's possible to achieve

**About The Role**

We are looking for a technician with some experience of hands-on skills, which are the key to the success of the radioactive waste operations, health physics and dosimetry teams here at ISIS. Radioactive waste operations is a challenging, yet rewarding task that requires novel and inventive thinking to dispose of it safely. This is one of the varied roles you will be asked to cover as part of the HPFS team. In carrying out these and other roles that may be asked of you, you will report to the Health Physics Team Leader.

As a Health Physics Surveyor, you will be involved in the delivery and collection of radioactive waste packages, characterisation and processing of radioactive waste, and packaging waste before its disposal or long-term decay storage. With various handheld tools, you will use innovative methods to sample radioactive waste as part of the characterisation process. You will also use compactors, croppers, and bandsaws to process radioactive waste.

In our team, you will have excellent opportunities through our career scheme to further develop and enhance your skills to enable you to progress into the role of a Health Physics Surveyor. For example due to the nature of some of our waste, you will be trained and gain experience in the operation of overhead travelling cranes and drive a forklift truck.

**Key responsibilities**

As a Health Physics Surveyor, you will provide a radiation and radioactive contamination monitoring service as prescribed by survey schedules across the RAL site. This will involve using a variety of specialist ionising radiation protection instrumentation and monitoring techniques and producing survey reports.

You will also provide radiation surveillance monitoring in the workplace to all personnel undertaking operational work in the ISIS accelerator, synchrotron, target stations, experimental instruments, support facilities and waste storage areas.

Being part of the Health Physics Section, you will respond to radiation and radioactive contamination incidents, including STFC membership of the UK RADSAFE scheme. You will also be required to work out of normal office hours on and off-site occasionally due to business need.

**Essential aspects you will be reviewed at shortlisting (S) and/or Interview (I) stage**:

- City & Guilds Radiation Safety Practice Stage 1 or NVQ Radiation Protection Diploma Level 2, or equivalent. (S)
- Must be fit to be a classified person under the Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017, and must be fit to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE)
- Will have good interpersonal skills, including good communication skills (verbal and written), with a proven ability to work with others.
- Processes to evaluate and problem-solve.
- Have experience using hand and power tools such as drills, reciprocating saws, band saws, and croppers. (S&I)
- Be willing to work out of normal office hours on and off-site.
- Will have some experience working with ionising radiations and radioactive material and working in designated controlled and supervised radiation and contamination areas (preferably in high-energy particle accelerators), and have some experience in using radiation and radioactive contamination instruments in the workplace. (S&I)
- Will have experience keeping detailed records and compiling reports, graphs, and survey diagrams, and be able to use Microsoft Office (and Office 365) packages to produce reports and records, perform data calculations and analysis, and presentations. (S&I)
- Hold a valid full driving license to operate a car in the UK. (I)

**Employee Benefits**

We are offering a permanent position with a whole host of benefits including:

- 30 days holiday (in addition to 10.5 bank holidays and privilege days).
- Flexible working hours.
- An excellent defined average salary pension scheme.
- Employee shopping/travel discount
