Senior Journalist, Bbc Social News

Job Introduction
Would you like to be part of a team that runs some of the world’s biggest news social media accounts? Would you like to help run and shape BBC News accounts on FB (53m followers), Insta (20m followers), Twitter (combined over 100m followers) and YT (10m subscribers)?

We’ve just launched on Tiktok and our brilliant team is expanding, we need a Senior Journalist to join our hub in Salford. We only ask that you are creative, crazy about the potential of social media to deliver News to audiences both in the UK and globally and can cope under pressure (in a breaking news environment).

Main Responsibilities
You will be working on a shift basis across seven days (not including night shifts). We will work hybrid; roughly 60% in office, 40% from home. We have teams across the UK; the main hub will be in Cardiff, with other teams in Glasgow, Salford and Birmingham.

As well as journalistic intuition, creativity and expertise, we increasingly make use of data to drive tactical decisions about the type, format and timing of content posted, as well as in tracking how our content performs. The role also supports other social media activity across all platforms.

The social team is also involved in the wider integration of social media into newsroom operations - you should be capable of identifying breaking news, user generated content of value and other types of newsworthy material being distributed on social media.

You must be able to identify a shareable story a mile-off and know how to sell it, in the right way, appropriate to the platform and target audience, generating maximum reach, engagement and/or referrals.

As a Senior Journalist, you will also provide editorial support to the Editors and supervise the work of other Journalists.

To succeed in this role, you should be comfortable with data and analytics, able to work with visuals and a well-developed data led understanding of how social media works. You will have experience in managing your own workload as well as leading others and giving feedback to the wider team.

Knowledge of social media platforms and what works well with them is a must; together with experience of working with UK and World stories (including breaking news). You will have excellent writing skills, experience of social media content curation and optimisation and brilliant picture and video editing skills. Evidence of working with paid tools and dashboards such as SocialFlow, CrowdTangle and NewsWhip is important.
