**Summary**:
The Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) is an executive agency of the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra). We are responsible for identifying, managing, and controlling incidents and outbreaks of endemic and exotic diseases and pests in animals, plants and bees, as well as carrying out research. We provide unique capabilities and an evidence base for UK government, together with international reference centre responsibilities.
We are seeking a data liaison officer specialised in Salmonella data to support the delivery of critical outputs and advice from our surveillance activity. Epidemiological Sciences is a nationally important, multidisciplinary department with expert skills in epidemiology, statistics, risk analysis, modelling and data science.
**Job description**:
The post holder will build and maintain a deep specialist knowledge of the data availability and meaning from the different surveillance streams, surveys, research projects. They will provide the intelligent customer function for Salmonella data, work with others across the agency, managing and supporting Salmonella surveillance and research work by making sure accurate and assured data is available to meet project and customer requirements on a regular and ad-hoc basis.
They will also serve as a member of the Epidemiology of Foodborne Infections Group (EFIG) Secretariat with UK Health security agency (UKHSA) and Food Standards agency (FSA) colleagues. Alongside the secretariat responsibilities, this activity complements the core role providing understanding and awareness of foodborne infection issues from ‘farm to fork’.
Providing data for the regular Salmonella reports as specified by the Salmonella surveillance in animals project (FZ2000). These include weekly reports, quarterly livestock reports, quarterly feedingstuffs reports, quarterly NCP reports and annual NCP reports, and any others that may be required in the future.
Working with the wider project team to incorporate whole genome sequencing data into surveillance reports.
Providing Salmonella data to colleagues in response to both regular and ad-hoc data requirements to support disease control and outbreak responses activity.
Project managing the production of the annual Salmonella in Livestock Production publication, including creating tables and figures, writing of text for certain chapters, liaising with authors and reviewers. Ensuring the report meets accessibility standards for online publications.
Being the first port of call for colleagues across our regional network and locally regarding Salmonella data problems or queries.
Regularly checking the Salmonella data on LIMS to make sure that it is correct and ensuring it is corrected, where applicable, either by DES or by colleagues in the regions.
Attending and providing specialist salmonella data expertise at relevant meetings including the Salmonella Steering Group meetings.
Serving as a member of the Epidemiology of Foodborne Infections Group (EFIG) Secretariat, including attendance at the biannual Secretariat meetings and biannual main EFIG meetings. Creation of papers for the main EFIG meeting and presentation of the data at the meetings.
Overseeing the management and training for the processing of data from Direct Avian Salmonella submissions and ensuring the daily data entry staff resources are in place.
Providing cover for the Direct Avian data entry when required.

**Experience and Essential Skills**
Experience of data handling and extraction from large data systems (such as LIMS) through platforms such as Business objects
Experience of data validation and data quality assurance processes.
Knowledge of salmonella surveillance in animals and some knowledge of farming, in particular the poultry industry
Good working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, Access, Outlook
Good interpersonal skills and the ability to build and maintain strong working relationships with colleagues, internal and external customers, and wider stakeholders
Good communication skills applied within multidisciplinary and remote teams across organisations
Basic data analysis skills, to include being able to descriptively analyse temporal data and provide commentary in the surveillance reports.
