- Job description- As a Team Member in our King’s Lynn Field Team, you will be operating and maintaining our river and flood defence assets and responding to flood and pollution incidents. You will be working as part of a diverse team and will help to carry out routine maintenance, efficiently, safely and to a high standard.
Delivering routine maintenance for our assets, you will help protect properties and infrastructure by maintaining flood defences and river channels. This physical role involves working as part of a team, outside in all weathers, using a variety of different tools and equipment to carry out tasks, such as asset maintenance, debris removal and grounds maintenance work.
Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. We act quickly when flooding or environmental impacts occur, providing an emergency response both during and outside of our normal working hours by participating in an incident standby/call out rota. You will be trained and supported to contribute to our incident response.
You will participate in our 24-hour call-out rosters, responding with your team to operate our assets including pumps, flood gates, flood barriers and penstocks. You will play an active role in protecting homes and businesses from flood risk. Once trained, there will be standby and overtime opportunities available, and therefore scope to enhance the basic salary package.
Our Field teams have a range of technical skills they use to deliver watercourse maintenance, along with asset maintenance and incident response. The team handle a variety of specialist equipment including light plant and equipment, robotic and ride on machinery, and associated tools and equipment.
A requirement of this role is to complete the Water Environment Worker Apprenticeship scheme. Enrolment is compulsory but you will be funded and supported through the 18 month programme.
- The team- The Operations field team is based at our King’s Lynn depot, delivering a maintenance programme on rivers and watercourses across the area and responding to flooding and environmental incidents. We provide advice and support to our colleagues in Asset Performance, Biodiversity and Environment Management. We also work across the country when required to assist with flood and environmental impact response.
Experience/skills required- Essential:

- The desire to be working out on the ground in all weather conditions
- Good communication skills.
- Self-motivation, with the ability to work well in a team
- Personal skills requirement: taking initiative, good time management, flexibility, problem solving and decision making
- Basic understanding of IT technology including smart phones and tablets.
- Willingness to learn new practical and technological skills.
- Willing to undertake the Water Environment Worker Apprenticeship scheme.
- Full driving licence.
- Live within 45 minutes' drive of your local depot

It would be helpful, but not essential, if you had:

- Previous experience of a hands-on and physical role
- Have experience in a range of vegetation management machinery and equipment. But all necessary additional training will be provided.

Enrolment in the Water Environment Worker Apprenticeship is compulsory.
