Aston Law School’s mission is to be distinctive, combining academic rigour with practical insight, for ‘future ready’ LLB and LLM graduates. We do so as The Guardian’s University of the Year 2020, with Gold TEF status, as one of the leading UK universities for Entrepreneurship and Social Mobility and with a nationally recognised law clinic.
We formed our Law Clinic in 2018 and it makes an important contribution to up to 20 of our undergraduate and postgraduate students during their placement work experience in which they continue to develop the mindset and skills required by twenty-first century employers.
Clients are referred to the Clinic from a variety of established sources and our work tends to focus on commercial contracts and issues, including IP rights, in the form of specific advice and proactive workshops to local business communities and entrepreneurs. We have plans for strategic growth of our Clinic to emulate modern law firms and their ESG agenda, in addition to the existing workload. We would also like to expand the scope of the Clinic to include more of our students, and in due course to recruit further supervisors (we have strong relationship with a number of law firms) and administrators. Finally, we are interested to explore the prospect of developing an academic research dimension to the Clinic’s work that will inform local policy on business support and the future direction of the Clinic and the School.
