These are exciting times and with the recent expansion and remodelling of the Lewisham & Greenwich Trust Maternity Services, opportunities have arisen for Maternity Care Assistants to join our Multi - Professional Team, in its deliverance of high quality care to our women and their families.
If you join the apprenticeship, you will be completing a nationally recognised Level 2 or Level 3 qualification in the area appropriate to your role, but will also gain paid valuable work experience in an environment where you can make a difference
The role comprises of working within the antenatal clinic supporting midwives and the team by maintaining a safe clinical environment. This will include assisting clients, phlebotomy, urinalysis and general housekeeping. All our staff work within our Trust Values, treating all clients and their families with respect and compassion and providing high quality, safe effective care.
A Maternity Care Assistant post enables exposure to a wide range of skills and offers wide scope for professional development.
You will be based on Antenatal Clinic buy may need to participate in the provision of cover for the unit, including flexibility to move within team areas as the service requires.
You will maintain high standards of cleanliness and hygiene within your clinical area i.e. cleaning of rooms, equipment, making beds and keeping a good stock supply.
You will assist the midwives in the care of women/birthing people and participate in maintaining the general personal hygiene needs of women/birthing people if required.
You will be aware of the general condition and wellbeing of women/birthing people in ANC and report any deviation from the norm immediately to a qualified member of the multi-professional team.
You will maintain accurate records of all care provision in the clinical records.
You may need to escort clients to different clinical areas within the unit and act as a chaperone if required.
You will undertake phlebotomy and urinalysis and, if necessary, cannulation as directed by the RM.

Working as a Maternity Care Assistant enables exposure to a wide range of skills and offers wide scope for professional development. The Trust provides an extensive range of in-house training, which is identified at annual appraisal reviews.
Our whole maternity service is exciting and innovative and due to this, we received a CQC rating of ‘Good’ in 2017 which we have followed with another rating of ‘Good’ in 2018. This follows on from winning the 2016 RCM award for Midwifery Service of the Year. A few more of our recent achievements include:
- A number of our students have achieved Student midwife of the year awards from BJM and MMA
- Official accreditation of being Baby Friendly Units, Level 3, on UHL, Level 2 at QEW
- Our infant feeding adviser at QEH won the BJM Peer supporter in improving BF award, 2018
- One of our incredible mentors made the Nursing time finals for Mentor of the Year award
- One of our consultant Midwives won the Doreen Norton award 2019 for her work with migrant women
The post holder will be supported to achieve an Apprenticeship in Healthcare Support Worker. Through academic and work place activities, the post holder will develop the skills required in the job description, to work in a quality driven, responsive and customer orientated department.
An apprentice will do 80% on the job training - work based learning activity and the remaining 20% is off the job training (self-directed learning and classroom attendance.)
The apprenticeship is a work-based qualification evidenced via learning activity at work, a portfolio of work and observations. Training and assessment are completed on work-site, with some off the job training involving a combination of online learning, classroom attendance, webinars and self-directed learning. An external assessor will carry out observations in the workplace to assess practical competence.
All apprenticeship standards have End-point assessment (EPA). End-Point Assessments will involve an independent assessor carrying out final assessments with the apprentice, to ensure that the competences and learning within the ‘Apprenticeship Standard’ have been met. Apprentices can achieve a pass, merit or distinction dependent on how well they perform in their End-Point Assessment.
You will be required to commit to the apprenticeship training study requirements and complete the training activities and assessments, in given timescales.
