OVERVIEW

The School of Human and Behavioural Sciences houses two of Bangor University’s high performing departments: the Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences and the Department of Psychology. Our world-leading research spans elite performance, physical activity, health and applied human physiology, cognitive neuroscience, clinical interventions, and psychological wellbeing. The Institute for Applied Human Physiology (IAHP) conducts world-leading research in applied physiology with the purpose of improving human performance, health, and well-being. We pursue this mission under four key themes: preventative and rehabilitative medicine, people and the environment, sport and human performance, physiology, and technology. IAHP provides research and consultancy services to organisations, groups, and individuals within business, sport, clinical, emergency, and armed settings. These collaborative knowledge exchange projects are impactful having delivered beneficial change to many organisations and people.

In the recent Research Excellence Framework Exercise (2021), our Sport and Exercise Science department was ranked in the Top 5 overall in the UK and 3rd (GPA = 3.65) in the UK for research of internationally excellent and world-leading quality. With an excellent score in terms of the societal impact of its world-leading and internationally excellent research, our leading sport scientists are carrying out research into mental resilience, elite performance, dietary behaviour and metabolism, and exercise and vascular health. The Department of Psychology was also ranked 17th in the UK for the societal impact of its research. Our sport and exercise science facilities include exercise and environmental physiology labs containing thermal and hypoxia environmental chambers, a dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scanning room and a sleep laboratory. Our PAWB building houses a more traditional exercise physiology lab including cycle ergometers, rowing machines, and treadmills and the Padarn Building includes a biochemistry lab, a 3D motion analysis lab and a cardiovascular research lab. In addition, we also use the Canolfan Brailsford Sport Centre to teach strength and conditioning (see Platform 81), coaching, physical education and team based physiological loading using a newly installed Catapult GPS system. These facilities are complemented by access to outdoor 3G pitches and an athletics track based at Treborth. Our psychology research environment is supported by in-house, state of the art equipment and resources including a research-dedicated 3T MRI, supporting fMRI, MRS and DTI; multiple eye-tracking labs; high-density EEG; and MRI-guided stimulation techniques including TMS and tDCS.
