Cwmbran, United Kingdom Swansea Bay University Health Board Full time

The Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service Cymru (EMRTS Cymru) is Wales’s exciting and innovative aeromedical prehospital and transfer service. The service primarily operates on the Wales Air Ambulance Charity’s fleet of EC-145 and EC-135 Helicopters, backed up by rapid response vehicles which provide operational and weather resilience.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for suitably qualified and experienced clinicians to work as part of our EMRTS Critical Care Hub (ECCH) team.

Operating the function of both the ECCH/ and the Trauma Desk (TD), Critical Care Hub Clinicians will prioritise and manage emergency medical/trauma calls and deploy and co-ordinate specialist land and air assets.

The Critical Care Hub Clinician assesses high acuity patients with critical illness and/ or injury, and remotely guide appropriate support and therapy, ensuring they are transferred or retrieved rapidly and safely to a care facility which is best suited to provide treatment for their ongoing complex needs.

The ECCH Clinician will work as part of a team initiating effective care and treatment to patients in both hospital and prehospital environments within appropriate level of training, competency, and scope of practice. The service provides a clinician on the ECCH/trauma Hub 24/7.

Operating the ECCH & TD, ECCH Clinicians prioritise and manage emergency medical/trauma calls to include deployment and co-ordination of specialist land/air assets. This includes offering deployment advice to the WAST Clinical Contact Centres and clinicians requiring clarification of EMRTS criteria. ECCH Clinicians will provide clinical support to ambulance clinicians in the management of major trauma and critical illness patients as part of the Major Trauma Network (MTN), providing remote assessment of patients and management advice to on scene clinicians through the use of MTN trauma tools including supporting decision making on hospital destinations, advice to support distance transfers and be the arbiters in the decision to transfer to the MTC (Major Trauma Centre) or other Trauma Unit (TU)

They will participate in the development of research bids and be a member of the service research committee. Additionally, they will contribute to regular clinical audit activities which are key to continuous quality improvement.

Primarily non-clinical, the Critical Care Hub Clinician will be at the heart of the EMRTS service and is key to ensure timely provision of critical care support to patients.

The Emergency Medical Transfer and Retrieval Service (EMRTS Cymru) exists to provide air and road based prehospital care and inter-facility patient retrieval. An operational team is made up of a combination of critical care practitioners (CCP) and doctors, targeted to the patient’s needs. The host organisation Swansea Bay University Health Board (SBUHB) is commissioned by Welsh Government to operate the service on a national basis. EMRTS Wales has input into five bases in Wales. The bases, operated by the Wales Air Ambulance Charity, are located in Dafen, Cardiff Heliport, Welshpool Airport, Caernarfon Airport, and the EMRTS Critical Care Hub (ECCH) Cwmbran. EMRTS teams work primarily on the helicopters of the Wales Air Ambulance Charity, operated by Babcock Aviation Services. The teams also have the ability to deploy by road as required in Rapid Response Vehicles (RRV). The service operates a 24hr critical care service in Wales. The team activates for two primary roles:

- Provision of critical care support to patients who are suffering from critical illness or injury in the prehospital environment.
- Undertaking time critical secondary inter-hospital transfers of critically ill or injured patients.
