The opportunity has arisen for a Band 6 Clinical Nurse Specialist to join the Integrated Pain Management Service (IPMS).

The successful applicant will assist in providing specialist pain management within a multidisciplinary team, and managing patients with acute and chronic pain conditions to ensure that patients receive the highest standard of care.

The IPMS is a busy and friendly multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals based in the West Suffolk Hospital and the Community, providing interventional, pharmacological and non-pharmacological strategies to assist patients with pain management.

The key elements of the Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) role are to assist in the provision of quality pain management across the Trust through comprehensive clinical, educational, audit and research initiatives.

As a member of the team you will provide education and information for patients and/or their carers in the management of acute and chronic pain, promoting their understanding and the ability to evolve strategies for self management. You will participate in the delivery of clinical education sessions to all members of the multiprofessional team to promote effective use of pain standards, policies, protocols, guidelines and clinical equipment.

1.1. Provide specialist advice and guidance on the management of acute and chronic pain problems to all members of the multi professional team.

1.2. Under supervision of senior CNS’ manages own caseload receiving direct referrals from consultant staff, junior medical staff, nursing staff and other allied health professionals (AHPs).

1.3. Makes supervised referrals to other professionals as necessary.

1.4. Challenges poor practice and inappropriate interventions in relation to pain management.

1.5. Assesses the implementation of recommendations and the effectiveness of the management plan in achieving long-term patient outcomes.

1.6. Provides education and information for patients and/or their carers in the management of acute and chronic pain, promoting their understanding and the ability to evolve strategies for self management.

1.7. ** Undertakes independent prescribing for own case load within the limited of the post-holder’s competence and the requirements of the nurse specialist role.

** This requirement applies only to CNS’ who have undertaken Independent Nurse Prescribing with the agreement of the Trust.

2. Communication & Team Working

2.1. Establishes effective working relationships and collaboration with other health care professionals whose role impinges on the service e.g. nurses, doctors, AHPs, anaesthetic department and pharmacy.

2.2. Maintains effective communication networks and working relationships with personnel outside the organisation.

2.3. Collaborates with Consultants, Senior CNS’, and Ward Managers to ensure that clinical staff within the Trust are supported through education, advice and clinical protocols to effectively manage patients experiencing pain.

2.4. Participates in multi professional meetings relating to pain management.

2.5. Empowers patients to make informed choice regarding drug therapy and life style changes acting as the patient’s advocate and using mediation skills when communicating between patients, carers and profess
