The post is designed to allow part time educational activities. Any arrangement agreed will be for a maximum of 4 sessions per week in medical education and 6 sessions with emergency medicine. This represents a unique opportunity to develop your skills and knowledge in medical education as well as providing valuable experience in the emergency department. It will be enjoyable, fulfilling and relevant to the future practise of any doctor. The post will allow sufficient time to explore this area in detail and develop original ideas. It will enhance professional and personal development and be flexible enough to allow independent study.

The Medical Educational component of the post will be supervised by the Senior Medical Education Fellow and will work closely alongside a group of 4 junior clinical fellows who are employed clinically full time in the trust.

The post holder will be expected to work flexibly between medical education and the emergency department, working a maximum of 40 hours in total each week. There will be no on call commitment but addition work paid pro rata through the NHS professional can be undertaken. Example of weekly timetable (to be agreed individually)

The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust (PAHT) provides a full range of general acute, outpatient and diagnostic services at The Princess Alexandra Hospital in Harlow, the Herts and Essex Hospital in Bishop’s Stortford, and St Margaret’s Hospital in Epping.

We employ 3,500 staff and serve a local population of around 350,000 people living in west Essex and east Hertfordshire, centred on the M11 corridor and the towns of Harlow, Bishop’s Stortford and Epping. Our extended catchment area incorporates a population of up to 500,000 and includes the areas of Hoddesdon, Cheshunt and Broxbourne in Hertfordshire.

On a day to day basis it is expected that the post holder will have a fixed schedule of varied teaching
activities in the trust including overseeing the junior fellows.
These activities can be broadly split into;
1. Small group teaching
In particular the delivery of problem based learning to 3rd year students
2. Formal didactic lectures
The delivery of established programme of lectures and tutorials to the 5th year students.
3. Bedside teaching and mentoring schemes
Running a programme of mentoring for the students and facilitation of bedside teaching
using the junior fellows and other employees of the trust
4. Simulation
Working with the clinical skills facilitator and their deputy, and dependant on experience the
delivery and development of simulation training in undergraduate education
5. E learning forum activities
An active involvement in the e learning platform “AskALEX” in the creation of a virtual forum
of learning
6. Clinical skills teaching and examination practice
Planning and delivery of regular clinical skills training to all student groups and the delivery
of mock OSCE examination.
The opportunity to visit ARU on occasions to provide teaching to the Year 2 group will be
offered.
