The main purpose of the role is to investigate of homicide and other major crime incidents. To actively participate in a wide range of evidence gathering and criminal investigation tasks involving victims, witnesses, technical sources and suspects. To ensure the delivery of effective Major Crime Investigation as directed by the Head of the Major Investigation Unit.

**Main Responsibilities**:
To contribute to major investigations by actively participating in a wide range of evidence gathering and crime investigation tasks, exercising designated Investigating Officer powers.

To attend scenes of crime and identify fast-track lines of enquiry and ensure all available evidence is preserved in order to maximise forensic opportunities.

To take on roles as directed by MIU supervision, be that CCTV lead, exhibits, disclosure, FLO, suspect interviews, witness interviews or any other role commensurate to training and experience as directed by supervisors and/or SIO. To complete allocated actions and tasks to a high standard with limited supervision.

To secure and preserve evidence through the proficient use of and capture of evidence from technical equipment and media (CCTV systems, body worn video, digital media, police intelligence systems etc.)

To act as officer in the case (OIC), preparing and submitting evidential files to the Crown Prosecution Service, observing the highest professional standards in relation to quality, timeliness and evidential integrity adhering to CPIA principles of identification of relevant lines of enquiry and disclosure. Develop an excellent working relationship with the Crown Prosecution Service, attending case conferences and court hearings.

To collaborate with other departments, police forces, external agencies and the public in relation to the gathering of evidence, identifying and tracing offenders, and ensuring that all aspects of the investigation are taken into account.

To undertake other duties commensurate with the nature, level of responsibility and grading of this post, as required.

**Knowledge**:
Demonstrable knowledge, equivalent to that of a Detective Constable in the same department, i.e. PIP Level 2:

- Key offences in criminal law including all major offences against the person and against property
- Key aspects of criminal procedure legislation, including the PACE and CPIA
- The fundamental workings of the courts and the wider criminal justice system
- Achieving Best Evidence, investigative interviewing of both witnesses and suspects, case file preparation and an awareness of forensic techniques
- MIRSAP processes
- Murder manual

Working Knowledge and understanding of:

- PACE
- RIPA and covert investigation tactics
- CPIA
- Human Rights
- Data Protection

**Experience**:

- Experience in investigating and prosecuting serious and complex crime investigation
- Exhibits management and disclosure
- Desirable - working knowledge of HOLMES

**Key Skills**:

- A proven all-round investigative ability
- Possess an analytical mind, a methodical approach and have attention to detail
- The ability to effectively and efficiently handle and interview victims, witnesses and suspects
- Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to interact with people from all walks of life and communicate with them at a level appropriate to their understanding
- The ability to work independently with limited supervision whilst simultaneously part of a tight-knit team working towards the same objectives
- The ability to collaborate with other agencies and partners
- Have an aptitude towards information technology, the ability to be trained in a variety of both national and local systems and also be familiar with standard PC software
- Have excellent communication skills both written and orally and to be able to deliver presentations and contribute effectively to briefings
- Able to maintain personal resilience and wellbeing in complex and challenging situations

**Special Conditions**

Travel throughout Warwickshire Police area.

Warranted powers.

The post holder will be required to lawfully exercise with professional judgement the 'designated powers' of an investigator as determined by the Police Reform Act 2002, and as authorised by the Chief Constables of Warwickshire Police.

Risk of exposure to indecent, offensive and/or upsetting images and information. Attendance at scenes of violent death and post mortem examinations.

Occasional unsocial hours and rest day working when the need arises.
