**Job description**:
The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero Climate Science team is looking for an enthusiastic scientist with excellent communication skills and a strong interest in ensuring UK domestic and international policy is informed by the best available climate science.

As a key member of the Climate Science team you will play a meaningful role in crafting and delivering scientific advice and information to support the achievement of DESNZ’s climate goals. Your key area of work will be improving the scientific understanding of the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions making sure that Government has access to the best available evidence to inform policy making and help the UK meet its Net Zero targets.

The Climate Science team sits within DESNZ’s Science and Innovation for Climate and Energy (SICE) Directorate and is responsible for providing scientific advice on issues including the climate system, greenhouse gas emissions and pathways, climate risks, bio-energy and geo-engineering. It is a friendly, fun and supportive team, with a focus on personal and professional development and well-being. The post holder will have a diverse range of exciting and stretching responsibilities in the Climate Science team.
- Specific responsibilities could include:
- Designing and leading interesting new climate science research projects - examples include research to improve our understanding of emissions from the future hydrogen economy; new biomass activities; and greenhouse gas removal technologies.
- Building relationships with academic institutions and experts, research councils and industry partners, and working with them to deliver cutting-edge research to meet Government needs.
- Developing briefing documents and responding to questions on a range of climate science topics to ministers, senior civil servants and the public.
- Helping develop a strategy to improve UK greenhouse gas measurement infrastructure and modelling.
- Working with international partners and organisations such as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and through the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to make sure the global community has access to the best available science to meet the global emissions reductions targets.
