Job Scope:
The Royal Society is looking for an experienced professional to join the People and the Planet team as a Policy Adviser responsible for managing and supporting projects within our climate and environment programme. An understanding of the science of climate change and its related policy landscape will be essential.

The People and the Planet team, situated in the Science Policy team, works with the Society’s Fellows and other experts to develop and promote independent, expert and timely advice to UK, European and international decision makers in matters of science policy. Recent climate change work includes a policy report on air quality and climate change, a conference on the implications for the UK of the recent reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, and a discussion meeting on the economic impacts of climate change.

The successful applicant will have a strong track record of using evidence to help shape and inform national and/or international policy, managing projects and events, and of building and leveraging senior stakeholder networks. They will work closely with the Fellowship and with influential stakeholders at the heart of government, professional bodies and across the Academies to respond to and shape what is an evolving policy landscape. This will include work on evidence synthesis, conducting analysis, and drawing on a strong network of contacts across a broad and complex stakeholder ecosystem.

- **_ Events_**_: _**Bringing together policymakers and scientists to discuss current topics in science policy.

The Society’s policy work is led by the science policy team, working closely with the Media Relations, Public Affairs, Public Engagement, International Affairs and Diversity & Industry Programme teams. Activities are undertaken by a team of Senior Policy Advisers and Policy Advisers who work across a range of themes and policy issues, according to priorities and their own expertise. Science Policy’s partners include other academies, learned societies, funding agencies, government, industry and the public sector.

**Responsibilities**:

- Delivering and managing multiple projects within climate and other environmental public policy issues. This includes:

- Desk research of scientific and policy issues, particularly on climate, environment, and sustainability issues.
- Keeping up-to-date with policy and wider developments in the UK, the EU and devolved administrations
- Creating programme and project plans, setting up meetings, writing minutes and agendas for meetings.
- Drafting policy briefings and reports, editing, proof-reading and managing the design of external facing material.
- Organising the logistics for internal and external policy-related events. This involves liaising with the Society’s internal conferencing and events section, arranging catering, sending out invitations, managing the delegate list, on the day registration, preparing relevant material for the event.
- Work closely with the Society’s International Affairs Team to deliver international projects
- Building national and international networks of influence with policymakers, scientists and other stakeholders at their own and at a higher level of seniority.
- Management of day-to-day financial activities such as raising purchase orders, paying invoices, dealing with expenses claims, logging spending accurately and keeping spend within budget.
