To work under the direct instruction of teaching/senior staff, usually in the classroom with the teacher, to enhance pupils learning either in groups or individually supporting access to learning for pupils and providing general and specific assistance to the teacher in the management of pupils and the classroom.

**Responsibilities**:
The Post holder working to this job description may undertake any of the following main duties and responsibilities.
- Support pre planned learning/behaviour activities as directed by the teacher
- Using agreed structured observation as directed by the class teacher to feedback on learning, behaviour, participation and achievement, to support the planning and evaluation of the learning process in respect of groups and individual students
- Interact with pupils in ways that support the development of their ability to think and learn, including the use of careful questioning
- Assist teachers in the implementation of appropriate behaviour management and teaching & learning strategies
- Support pupils in their social and emotional wellbeing, in implementing related programmes, including social, health and physical needs
- Assist in escorting and supervising pupils on educational visits and out of school activities
- Undertake break supervision as required
- Under the general direction of the teacher participate in establishing and maintaining effective relationships with pupils, parents/carers and with other agencies/professionals
- Communicate effectively with all pupils, families, carers and other agencies / professionals
- Pay due regard to professional boundaries, maintaining appropriate levels of confidentiality
- Participate in staff meetings
- Carry out tasks associated with pupils’ personal hygiene, (including personal intimate care) and welfare, including physical and medical needs, whilst encouraging independence
- Be responsible for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of pupils in line with policy and legislation, raising concerns as appropriate
- Prepare classroom materials and learning areas, and undertake minor clerical duties e.g. photocopying and displaying pupils work
- Support the use of ICT and adhere to relevant policies
- Supervise and provide access arrangements for pupils sitting internal and external examinations and tests as required, ensuring that examinations comply with the Examination Board Regulations
- Participate in appraisal, training and other learning activities
- Be aware of and implement your health and safety responsibilities as an employee and where appropriate any additional specialist or managerial health and safety responsibilities as defined in the Health and Safety policy and procedure
- Work with colleagues and others to maintain health, safety and welfare within the working environment
- Promote inclusion and acceptance of all pupils

**What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?**

This is an Advanced apprenticeship in Teaching Assistant (Level 3).

It will involve a combination of on and off the job training in the workplace.

You will have monthly mentoring and guidance at work from a Craven College Learning & Development Advisor within the workplace.

After 18 months you will be entered to undertake an End Point Assessment, to complete your Apprenticeship.

The End Point Assessment will comprise of a practice observation with questions and answers and a professional discussion with the assessor.

**What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?**

Possibility of permanent employment and going on to complete further qualifications.

- GCSE or equivalent English (Grade A* - C (9-4)) essential
- GCSE or equivalent Maths (Grade A* - C (9-4)) essential

**About the employer**

St Mary & St Joseph Roman Catholic primary school is a voluntary aided mixed school for children aged 4 to 11 years. The school has four classrooms, a hall and an administrative area. It is pleasantly surrounded by its own grounds which are currently being developed to provide opportunities for outdoor learning. The school has approximately 105 pupils on roll and they are admitted at the beginning of the academic year in which their fifth birthday falls.
