We have an exciting opportunity for those interested in a career that can make a real difference to the local environment as part of the climate change agenda. Hydrometry is the measurement of rainfall, groundwater, river level and flows. You’ll routinely be working outdoors using your practical skills to install and operate rain gauges, level and flow measuring equipment in our local rivers and groundwater monitoring boreholes. Back at the office using your IT skills, you’ll process, quality check and archive the data that you’ve collected. Using your good communication skills you will then provide this in a timely manner to our customers, helping to ensure the health of our water systems.
We’re looking for enthusiastic, self-motivated and technically minded people with plenty of initiative to solve problems. You’ll play a key role in resolving issues or repairing monitoring equipment and telemetry systems. This is to ensure the Environment Agency is prepared to respond during environmental incidents and helping to protect people from the impacts of flooding.
We will provide you with full on the job training led by our experienced team members as well as formal training provided by external training suppliers. You will be trained and confident in the role before being asked to complete site visits on your own.

Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.
- The team- Our friendly, inclusive, and motivated team works closely to operate our assets to ensure accurate data is available for customers 24/7. Our monitoring service underpins many of the Environment Agency’s responsibilities relating to flood warning, incident management and managing our water resources. We work closely with colleagues in other teams, share knowledge freely, and develop individual strengths.

- Experience/skills required-
Confidence with IT systems, including Microsoft Office.
A positive can-do attitude and a passion for learning and protecting the environment.
Logical and analytical approach to problem solving with attention to detail.
Plenty of initiative, organisation and practical skills.
Excellent adherence to health and safety guidelines.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills as you will be working as part of a team and will have contact with the public.
Due to the nature of the role the below criteria are essential:

- Full UK driving licence.
- Ability to swim as you will be working in/near water.
- You will be required to pass colour vision tests prior to appointment as you will have to maintain electrical equipment with multi coloured wiring.
- Comfortable working outdoors in all weathers and alone at times.
