**Job Purpose**
The Deputy Head of the Undergraduate Medical School (UMS) for MBChB Year 3-5 will support the Head of the UMS in the provision of academic leadership and overall management in the development and delivery of teaching, research and other activities within the School to ensure it produces graduates who are fully equipped with the knowledge and competencies necessary for safe clinical practice and postgraduate training and practice. The role has particular responsibilities for Years 3-5 of the MBChB programme.

**Key Tasks**
1.To work collaboratively and participate actively with the review, revision and development of the undergraduate medical programme (including assessment) of Years 3-5 of the MBChB in the context of the overall curriculum and within the framework of:

- The requirements of the General Medical Council.
- Evidence of best educational practice.
- The University of Glasgow Learning and Teaching Strategy.
- Feedback on performance of graduates in clinical practice.
- Feedback from students.
2. To be an active member of the UMS Executive and the Operational Management Committee, chairing these groups in the absence of the Head of the UMS.
3. To provide leadership of the Years 3-5 MBChB academic team, and to interact with teaching staff and the Professional Services staff providing support to the MBChB.
4. To liaise and engage with the NHS staff involved in the delivery of the MBChB Programme, providing leadership as required.
5. To review and facilitate the development and training of staff, particularly clinical staff, participating in the delivery of Years 3-5 of the MBChB
6. To actively promote and encourage scholarship and research in medical education.
7. To provide line management for academic staff with responsibilities in Year 3-5 of the MBChB.

**PERSON SPECIFICATION**:

- A senior clinician with a proven track record of charismatic leadership and engagement.
- Clinically active with credibility in the medical community in Glasgow and the West of Scotland, with both NHS Hospital staff and General Practice.
- Commitment to, and experience of, fostering excellence in learning and teaching.
- Knowledge and experience of teaching, learning and assessment in undergraduate medical education.
- Experience of educational programme development and innovation.
- Commitment to research informed undergraduate medical education.
- Good management skills with the ability to listen, engage, persuade and negotiate.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

**Qualifications**

**Essential**
A1 MB ChB or equivalent and Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in specialty or GP training.

**Desirable**
A2 A higher degree in research or education.

**Knowledge, Skills & Experience**

**Essential**
C1 Experience and/or understanding of Undergraduate Medical Education in the UK, including curriculum design, national assessment strategy, funding and workforce planning.
C2 Experience of organising and delivering clinical teaching in different environments.
C3 Experience in working with the major partners of the UMS including the NHS, GMC, Medical School council, other Scottish HE institutions and Scottish Government.
C4 Experience of leadership in dynamic and multi-disciplinary teams.
C5 Strong interpersonal skills including the ability to engage confidently and competently with a range of internal and external stakeholders.
C6 A track record in managing students in difficulty including those with academic difficulties, professionalism concerns and welfare issues.
C7 Commitment to continuing professional development in education.

**Desirable**
D1 In depth understanding of the drivers, stakeholders and external factors impacting on undergraduate medical education in Scotland.
D2 Experience of UG Admissions processes and management.
D3 Experience of the provision of support to student pastoral care services.
D4 Experience of managing UG assessment procedures.

**Dimensions**
- The Undergraduate Medical School has approximately 1700 students and approximately 1500 teachers incorporating clinical academics and honorary clinical staff.
- Responsibility for the administrative management of key elements of the undergraduate medical degree (MBChB) student admissions, student support and assessment procedures.

**Planning and Organisation**
- Ongoing short and long term strategic planning to ensure the delivery of best practice in the areas of responsibility of the post.
- Oversee the planning and workload of the admissions, student support and welfare teams.
- Prioritise a complex workload.

- High level of independent decision making on a day to day basis prioritising own workload and that of others.
- Contribute to decisions with implications for UMS administration.
- Provide advice on operational administrative matters to senior academic and administrative colleagues.
