**Summary**:
The Domestic Abuse Commissioner’s Office is a small independent Arms-Length Body, sponsored by the Home Office. We provide public leadership on domestic abuse issues and play a critical role in driving change and holding national and local government to account for their role in improving the response to domestic abuse.
We are looking for a passionate and talented social researcher(s) to join our growing and high-performing team and lead in the implementation of a legal pilot project in the Domestic Abuse Commissioner’s Office.
The post holder will work across the research and the policy teams to implement the pilot phase of the Monitoring and Reporting Mechanism in the Family Court which is a finite piece of work. This is an area of priority for the Commissioner, with the establishment of the Monitoring and Reporting Mechanism arising out of a recommendation made in the Ministry of Justice’s Harm Panel Report. The work undertaken as part of this role will be crucial to improving accountability in the Family Court across England and Wales, with the purpose of improving the experiences of victims of domestic abuse and their children undergoing Private Family Law Proceedings.
This is an exciting time to be joining the Commissioner’s Office, which is still a relatively new entity - with the Commissioner receiving legal powers through the Domestic Abuse Act in November 2021. The team is relatively small and covers a range of research, policy, practice and comms functions.
- National Mapping of domestic abuse services, and ending the ‘postcode lottery’ in the response to domestic abuse;
- Better provision of specialist support provided through services run by and for communities facing the most marginalisation and who face greatest barriers to support;
- Improved support and safe reporting mechanisms for migrant victims and survivors;
- An improved response to domestic abuse within the Family Court;
- A stronger Coordinated Community Response to domestic abuse, most notably from health and education sectors; and
- Learning from Domestic Homicide Reviews and Suicide Reviews (amongst other relevant reviews) to better effect change and prevent future deaths.
The researcher(s) main focus will be in the Family Court, please find DAC’s report here: Improving-the-Family-Court-Response-to-Domestic-Abuse-final.pdf (domesticabusecommissioner.uk)
We are an inclusive and supportive office, and we encourage staff to engage with wider corporate activity to develop and improve the diversity and culture of the team.
**Job description**:
The post holder will be joining a dynamic, fast-paced environment, and we are seeking a proactive and highly motivated individual with thorough knowledge of research methodology, strong analytical/interpretation skills and experience managing social research projects. They will be required to interact with victims and survivors of domestic abuse, as well as perpetrators so must be sensitive in their approach.
The post holder will form part of a small research team to support the work of the Commissioner in driving improvements in the response to domestic abuse in the Family Court. The role will focus on the delivery of a Family Court Monitoring and Reporting Mechanism. The mechanism looks to increase understanding, transparency, and accountability within the
Family Court on how both allegations of domestic abuse, and survivors themselves and their children, are treated during the court process.
The post holder will be central to the delivery of the Monitoring and Reporting Mechanism in court sites across England Wales, which will gather and record data and information on how domestic abuse allegations are being treated in the Family Court. This will require the post holder to use a range of qualitative and quantitative research and analysis methods and carry out primary and secondary research.
The post holder will be expected to travel to the selected court sites to watch proceedings, as well gather data, conduct interviews and study case files.
