The Office for Life Sciences (OLS) is a fast-paced strategy and policy implementation unit of c.100 people, working within government and with external stakeholders to ensure that the UK is one of the best places in the world for life sciences companies to grow, creating economic opportunity and jobs across the country, and delivering health benefits for the UK population.
As a joint unit between DHSC and the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT), we are uniquely placed to bridge the gap between government, the NHS and industry, to support, grow and maintain the life sciences sector.
In addition, OLS has a range of active and engaging staff-led corporate workstreams, including; Equity, Diversity and Inclusion; Health, Wellbeing and Fun; Learning and Development; and Connections. Each delivered and led by individuals across the directorate, with responsible champions from the senior leadership team.
**Job description**:
We are looking for a HEO to join OLS’ collaborative Innovation and Growth team. The postholder will work in the Health Innovation Policy Team, supporting delivery of policies to boost the access and uptake of health innovation.
The team is working to ensure patients in the UK are some of the first in the world to benefit from cutting-edge treatments and technologies, whilst supporting our thriving health innovation community to make the UK a destination of choice for research and investment in life sciences and boosting the UK Life Sciences Sector.
The postholder will work with colleagues across DHSC, DSIT, and the NHS to shape and deliver cross cutting health innovation policies to support the ambition of the NHS as a driver of innovation, working with both national and local innovation bodies such as the Accelerated Access Collaborative and the Health Innovation Networks.

**Role responsibilities**
The post holder will support the policy team to:
- Develop policy work with a focus on: creative solutions to difficult problems, coherence of message, and real-world impact, including shaping and oversight of detailed delivery plans.
- Support Ministers and senior officials by delivering high-quality advice, briefings, speeches, Parliamentary Questions, and correspondence.
- Influence and negotiate health innovation interests across Government to ensure OLS objectives are delivered and represented at the highest levels of Government.
- Build and maintain relationships internally, with the NHS, and industry to support work to deliver innovation policies.
- Collaborate effectively across OLS, displaying the values of a high performing team that values the contribution of all staff members.
**Key skills and experience required for the role**
Essential:
- Have stakeholder engagement and management skills and an ability to collaborate to drive work forward.
- Can demonstrate outstanding verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to compellingly and concisely explain complex policy issues.
- Are comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, and able to organise competing priorities to meet challenging deadlines and deliver at pace.
- Are able to quickly understand complex policy issues and identify their wider implications.
Desirable:
- An understanding of the life sciences sector and interest in life sciences.
- Experience briefing senior leaders.
