**Policy and campaigns adviser**

**Location**: London and home working

**Salary**: Grade 4, £30,000 - £32,000 per annum, depending on experience

**Contract type**: Permanent

**Working hours**: Full time (35 hours a week), but open to requests to work part time (28 hours per week). Standard working hours between 9 - 5, Monday to Friday. Hybrid working, with a minimum of 2 days a week in the office.

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Royal College of Physicians and contribute to our policy and campaigns work at a crucial time. We are a respected and influential healthcare organisation with a strong track record of successfully shaping policy, working across a number of high-profile issues including the NHS workforce, health inequality, clinical research and sustainability and climate change.

The policy and campaigns adviser will support us to develop our policy positions and further our campaigning aims. You will also support the president, senior officers and senior staff to communicate those positions to external stakeholders within UK government, Parliament and the wider health and care sector.

You will help us to analyse and interpret complex information to aid understanding and decision making. You will play an active role in monitoring the external landscape to identify and take advantage of opportunities to evolve and progress our policy positioning. You will also contribute to developing lines to take, drafting public statements and briefing senior officers and staff.

The policy and campaigns team - and the wider communications, policy and research directorate - is a fast paced, collaborative and innovative environment. We value the opinions and ideas of every member of the team and actively seek their contributions. As a key team member, you will contribute to setting our objectives and improving the ways we work. You will also work closely with other members of the department, in particular the media and engagement team.

**Responsibilities**
- Understanding and contributing to a portfolio of high-profile work relating to the NHS workforce, health inequality, clinical research and sustainability and climate change.
- Delivering robust horizon scanning and policy monitoring to identify opportunities to further our aims and/or evolve our policy positioning.
- Proactively maintaining a keen awareness of and identifying new issues and priorities, supporting the team to make recommendations for action and implementing them in partnership with senior officers, members, communications colleagues and other staff and organisations as appropriate.
- Working flexibly and proactively, undertaking a range of work such as writing briefings, lines to take, policy positions, reports, committee papers, consultation responses, public statements and bulletins.
- Preparing senior officers and staff for stakeholder meetings, and yourself representing the RCP at meetings and events.
- Maintaining and developing relationships with other health organisations and bodies involved in the delivery of care.
- Any other duties commensurate with your post, including deputising for the policy manager.

**Experience**
- Essential_

You will:

- have a background in policy development and influencing, understanding how the policy development process works and how to influence national policy processes
- be able to analyse and interpret information from a range of sources
- have excellent writing skills and experience of producing briefings, consultation responses and other communications on behalf of an organisation and senior people
- have experience of successfully managing competing views, priorities and interests to achieve your aims
- be able to quickly develop positive and effective working relationships with a diverse range of people, including those in senior positions
- be able to act on your own initiative to develop new work, proposing reasonable and realistic solutions
- understand the importance of and be committed to involving a diverse range of organisations and people in developing and delivering influencing work

You may have experience of:

- health and/or social care policy
- public affairs and/or communications management
- working with data and undertaking basic statistical analysis
- working in a membership organisation and involving members in advocacy.
