Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine
This substantive position is a replacement post and the successful applicant will join the 7 existing Intensive Care Consultants who lead patient care in the intensive care unit (ICU), one of the premier services in this high performing Foundation Trust. The CQC have recently described Critical Care services as ‘Outstanding’ in Salisbury.
Our Intensive Care Unit is housed in a modern facility containing 12 physical bed spaces, of which 10 are currently staffed to support a flexible mix of level 2 and level 3 patents. An additional clinical area adjacent to the unit has been created to accommodate a further 4 bed spaces providing cohorted surge capacity for Covid-19 patients. In the event that this capacity is no longer needed, it is anticipated that respiratory medicine will use this space as a respiratory HDU, alongside the existing respiratory ward.
We are currently advertising for one post in anaesthesia or intensive care. This is due to the flexibility of sessions worked by those currently covering both specialties. However, by the time of the interview, we may be able to appoint to further posts.
Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust (SFT) is an innovative hospital with a proud heritage and over 250 years of experience behind us. Here we’re driven to deliver an outstanding experience for everyone and have been well regarded for the quality of care and treatment we continue to provide for our patients and also our staff.
We are an acute Trust, rated “Good” by the CQC, with a track record of high performance providing regional and super regional specialist services such as: Burns, Plastics & Reconstructive Surgery, Wessex Regional Genetics Laboratory, Wessex Rehabilitation, Spires Cleft Centre and the Duke of Cornwall Spinal Treatment Centre. We have about 470 beds and employ over 4000 staff.
We support flexible working and will consider requests taking into account the needs of the service. We think working here is pretty rewarding. You can access a range of NHS discounts, receive a minimum of 35 days paid holiday (pro rata), and we offer a generous pension scheme. On-site benefits include car parking (fee applies), leisure centre, day nursery and holiday play scheme.
The anaesthetic department consists of a team of 32 Consultants, 10 SAS doctors and 19 trainees in anaesthetics and ICM. We support the usual range of district hospital surgical specialties, in addition to the regional Plastic Surgery and Burns service - where we are designated as a burns unit, and the supra-regional Spinal Injuries service. The anaesthetic department and ICU have a reputation for being extremely friendly and supportive, and are very highly regarded by trainees in the Wessex region. In addition to strong interests in medical education and service improvement, including enhanced recovery and pain management, our Consultants enhance the profile of the department through their engagement in a variety of wider Trust activities and transformation work.
There is a strong multidisciplinary ethos within the critical care team. There is a full complement of nursing and auxiliary healthcare staff, with a large proportion of the nursing team having obtained the ICU step course competency. There is also support from a dedicated team of physiotherapists guiding early ICU rehab, daily pharmacy, dietetics and nutrition support, and where necessary the unit has access to occupational therapy and clinical psychology professionals.
Patient care is enhanced by a multidisciplinary follow up service, which includes Clinical Psychology input, and there is a 24/7 Critical Care Outreach service supporting critical care delivery beyond the confines of the ICU. We participate in clinical research and the ICNARC case mix programme. The unit was recently recognised for the contribution to research in the Wessex research network awards.
