The lead midwife for Smoking Cessation will provide evidence-based information and education for women and their families, and health professionals in line with Stockport NHS foundation Trust policies, the NMC Midwives Rules and standards, and the NMC Code and public health guidance.

This is a key role in maintaining high standards of care for women and their families with Tobacco Addiction (smoking) in pregnancy and the postnatal period. The focus is to improve outcomes of women with the single biggest modifiable risk factors for pregnancy.

The post holder will work in partnership with service users, and the multidisciplinary team, and local stakeholders to improve, protect health and wellbeing. The post holder will be responsible for supporting the implementation of processes to secure a year-on-year increase in engagement of smokers within the specialist smoking cessation team.

The post holder will provide links between the Maternity service and other services involved in smoking cessation, including Stockport’s Tobacco Alliance, CCG, Public Health, GMAC-smoke free pregnancy programme, ABL (A Better Life) smoking cessation service in Stockport, and High Peak midwifery team.

Main

**Responsibilities**:

- Provide a visible, accessible and authoritative presence, acting as a professional role model by providing leadership and support within multidisciplinary and midwifery teams
- Work closely with the GM smoke free pregnancy programme members, adopting the pathways and embedding into Stockport’s ethos to positively support development of the smoke free practice with in its community
- Deal with highly complex, sensitive, emotional, psychological and health issues as they arise, with clients, their families and professional colleagues. Adopt a skilled approach utilizing counselling skills / behavioural suppor
- Participate at GM smoke free Network meetings, Stockport assurance sessions, including reporting to CCG commissioning managers, Public health commissioners, trust smoke free site, CURE and Stockport Tobacco Alliance meetings.
- Receive and triage referrals from ABL, and return data record sheets for local and national 4 week quit data.

Communications
- Communicate appropriately within a multidisciplinary team to devise an appropriate plan of care. This may include liaising with specialist midwives, social workers, community drug teams, child protection and mental health teams.
- Provide data to the Saving Babies Lives lead and GM smoke free network
- Communicate with women and their families in a form and manner consistent with their level of

understanding, culture, background and preferred ways of communicating.
- To maintain collaborative working relationships and effective communications between all members

of the multidisciplinary team, to ensure a high standard of co-ordinated client care

Responsibility for Patient Care
- Provide support and advice to colleagues in obstetrics, Family Nurse partnership, ultrasound department, safeguarding midwife, Mosaic and Pathfinders in relation to effects of smoking in

pregnancy.
- Provide specialist clinical advice within maternity services, working with senior midwives, Inpatient/ community matrons, and the deputy head of midwifery and nursing
- Provide expert advice, counselling, behavioural support to women and their families unborn in relation to the best possible health outcomes.
- Ensure that at all times the interests and well-being of the unborn is considered within specialist management plans for smoking on pregnancy.
- Encourage a holistic, non-stigmatising approach to vulnerable groups of clients requiring support
- Contribute to inter-agency assessments, the gathering and sharing of information and where appropriate analysis of risk
- Provide supervision to case-holding Midwifery support worker to develop individual
