Emergency Department Response Volunteer Co-ordinator
19 hours ago
We have been granted funding from the Hospitals Charity to employ an Emergency Department Response Volunteer Co-ordinator for a two year period to respond to the ever increasing demand for volunteers to support and enhance patient experience and support our Trust colleagues.
The role of Volunteer Co-ordinator within the Emergency Department and other associated wards such as the Urgent Treatment Centre, the Medical Assessment Unit and the Medical Short Stay Unit will work closely with staff in these areas to identify how volunteers can support patients and staff in providing the best possible care.
The ED Volunteer Co-ordinator will look at how volunteers can add value in a non-clinical way but in consultation with key staff in these areas, volunteers will work responsively as needs arise.
The ED Response Volunteer Co-ordinator will be located within the ED Department and would ideally be someone that is familiar with an Emergency Department or a Ward where there is a continuous flow of patients so they can spot areas where they can support and add value. The Co-ordinator will be responsible for recruiting suitable volunteers and providing them with additional training and support until they are embedded in the Department, they will allocate assignments to the volunteers.
The Co-ordinator will look at tasks the volunteer can do on a regular basis when not responding to an individual request and then how they can deploy them to a certain patient or activity.
**The ED Volunteer Co-ordinator will be responsible for**:
- Recruitment of suitable Emergency Department volunteers that can by trained to carry out multiple tasks
- Delivering specific training to volunteers
- Establishing partnerships outside of our organisation
- As the post will be located within the Emergency Department the Volunteer Co-ordinator will be able to build meaningful relationships with key staff to ensure they have a right hand supporter to easily identify and take on those tasks that clinical staff don’t need to be diverted by, such as making sure PPE is restocked, (suitable) patients are given hydration, nutrition and emotional support whilst they are in our care, we can help them stay in contact with family if they are unable to attend ED etc.
- Allocating volunteers to suitable interactions, this could be to help get someone out of Emergency Department into another department (helping discharge process) or back home.
- Introduce a Vocera page system for volunteers so that new requests can be acted on quickly by the next available volunteer.
- When ED is quiet these multiskilled volunteers can then pick up patient feedback forms or be diverted to other Wards to do the same tasks where needed throughout the hospitals.
We are required to measure the impact of our grant via our Better Impact volunteer database reporting mechanisms.
We are committed to ensure a work-life balance to all our staff by offering full time and part time roles, flexible working hours on a shift pattern to fit around your family life.
