**Job summary**:
We are recruiting a Senior Governance Adviser to provide vital secretariat support to senior officials in the Cabinet Office. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to be directly involved in the strategic decision-making processes which impact the whole department.

This role will sit in the central Cabinet Office Governance team, which is collectively responsible for delivering the Departmental Board, ExCo, Staff Board and all subcommittees. The CO Governance team is a part of the Assurance, Finance and Controls (AFC) Group, which sits within the Chief Operating Officer function (COO). The COO group supports Ministers and senior officials to set clear direction and maintain and oversee the performance and delivery of the department as a whole.

This role is London based owing to the need to attend ministerial meetings in a Cabinet Office location, currently 70 Whitehall.

**Job description**:
This postholder will work across the governance arrangements of the Cabinet Office (the Departmental Board, Board Subcommittees, ExCo, ExCo subcommittees, Staff Board), taking a lead role in the delivery of a subset of these committees and liaising across the Department to promote good governance and information flow.

The post holder will:

- Deliver end-to-end at least one committee, with flexibility to work across governance fora where necessary, and to develop and own their portfolio and participate in special projects.
- Offer strategic advice and support to senior officials and Ministers on the shape and delivery of Cabinet Office governance arrangements to meet government objectives and priorities.
- Work collaboratively, confidently and independently with the most senior stakeholders across the Cabinet Office, Whitehall and beyond to take forward corporate governance matters and objectives, ensure strategic alignment, and broker resolutions where perspectives differ.
- Provide leadership on discrete parts of the CO corporate governance team and a portfolio spanning Cabinet Office.
- Support the drafting of speaking materials and correspondence on governance matters.
- Support the wider governance team to continuously improve the service provided to the Cabinet Office Permanent Secretary.

**Person specification**:

- Experience of delivering a cycle of meetings at senior managerial - preferably Permanent Secretary - level
- Excellent communications and drafting skills, including minute writing
- A proactive approach, with excellent administrative and organisational skills and keen attention to detail
- An ability to work calmly and efficiently under pressure
- Sound judgement and the ability to think laterally in order to make connections between different areas of work within the Department that others may have missed
- A track record in maintaining effective relationships with a wide variety of people, including senior officials
- Experience of working closely in corporate governance or performance and risk management teams in a public sector organisation
- Strong organisational skills
- Understanding of good practice in corporate governance
- Knowledge and awareness of key policy and change initiatives across the Cabinet Office.
