**Collections Assistant - Keeping East Lancashire in the Picture, Grade 5**

There will also be a very occasional need to visit other venues in East Lancashire - including Accrington and Burnley Libraries - and Lancashire Archives and Local History in Preston. There may also be a very occasional requirement to help deliver engagement activities in the evening and on Saturdays.

**Our service**

Lancashire Archives and Local History cares for 900 years of the county’s history. Millions of items are stored on 9 miles of shelving in the strongrooms in Preston. Our collections include everything from medieval parchments to digital sound recordings. We collect and preserve archives so that Lancashire’s stories will be told in the future and to ensure they are also available for everyone to use and enjoy today. We are an Accredited Archive Service and we are supported by an amazing team of volunteers and the Friends of Lancashire Archives.

Lancashire Archives forms part of Lancashire County Council's Cultural Services, which also includes the Lancashire Library Service, operating around the County and offering a range of services including access to local history collections maintained and accessed within library buildings.

**The project**

A grant of £192,000 from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, and a further £30,000 from the Friends of Lancashire Archives, means we can get our exciting new project - Keeping East Lancashire in the Picture - off the ground.

Over the next two years the project will make the collections of historic photographs in East Lancashire Libraries more accessible, inclusive, and sustainable. We want to use the common ground provided by a shared local history to bring people together in Burnley, Pendle and Hyndburn. Participants will be encouraged to **Explore **our collections and supported to **Create **new images and to **Share **the old and new with the wider community.

Key features:

- 4 library project hubs: Nelson, Colne, Burnley, Accrington
- 75 digitisation and research volunteers working on the collections
- a programme of events in Burnley, Pendle and Hyndburn
- active engagement with South Asian heritage community groups, primary schools, local photographic societies and local communities generally
- 1000s of new images created showing life in East Lancashire now
- legacy planning for a county-wide roll-out of improved collections development

**The role**
- work with Lancashire Volunteer Partnership to recruit volunteers
- help train, plan work for, and support volunteers and celebrate their successes, with an emphasis on those based at Colne and Nelson libraries
- digitise and describe historic photographic images
- help deliver and inclusive and stimulating engagement programme based on the photographic collections. This will include school sessions, exhibitions and activities and events
- help monitor and evaluate the project
- work effectively with project partners and help identify new opportunities for engaging groups and individuals with the project
